muffler or full cat-back?

Hey guys, new here.....just had a brief question concering the exhaust on my lancer(ce gli 1999 1.5l).

Is there any decent gain on a catback system? ive been quoted $270 inc muffler for the cat-back(2"), or 120 for just the muffler replaced.(+ tip).

I figure if i get remote fuel consumption/performance gains it may be worth the cat-back, however i've also heard that there'll be next to no performance gains....any opinions? I started off just wanting to have it sound a little meaner, but we'll see what i end up doing :).

there's a few members here that have cat backs and told me they felt like when they drive their balls are bigger ;)

so go for it, cat back man :) i'd do it

lol, are there any real advantages though? sounds nicer/performance/fuel economy?

although feeling like my balls are bigger doesn't sound too bad

i dont know about fuel economy, but i heard it does help with sound and performance

noticably though? got yours done?...anyone who's got one installed have any before/after comparisons? hmm decisions...

i havnt got one, im still repping the 4g15stock ;)

ill leave this thread for the pro's lol

cat-back lancer in the house :)

hey there man, welcome to AUSLANCER btw.

iv got a 2 inch cat-back exhaust done on my car.
i got a muffler n tip with the pipe from the cat-back. this made a difference in sound yes, and a little in performance...
as soon as i replaced the muffler n tip with a HKS cannon, i gained more power, as the exhaust was able to escape faster. this also gave me a great sound (and a slight in-car vibration u can feel while sitting on your seat).

most people hate cannons, cause they make "farting sounds?" but i like em, they sound loud, deep, and mean.

without the 2inch cat-back piping, the cannon wouldnt sound as deep n mean though, more high pitched n "BARP'y"

there u go :)

thanks, great comparison. I'm not sure whether i want a canon or not, probably not...don't want anything thatll stand out that much :p...did u notice any fuel economy gains? if you did i could totally justify getting the cat-back done :). How much did it cost you by the way?

hmm, dropping ~$300 on it though...with no significant/noticable performance gains? unless someone could prove me wrong :). seems a little wasteful considering i've only got a 1.5. What mufflers do you guys have installed? and what would you recommend?

to what extent does the power increase though? takeoffs, generally more oomph or next to nothing? probably repeating myself but i just don't wanna drop the money on it and think it was a waste.

yes you will notice a bit of a increase but more so if you replace the whole system & do the extractors & a cold air feed but catbacks a great start you wont regret it

When I had my Excel I put a hi-flow cat (the old one was rooted) and a cat back to a 3.5" cannon. Looked funny as because it was an Excel and had a deep loud noise to it (not the typical fart/milo can sound, although sucha big cannon did look silly on a Excel). I noticed a mild decrease in low-mid torque but a decent increase in high end pull (yeah I know its a Excel but the 1998+ twin cams go alright for a cheap car). I did notice an increase in fuel consumption, but I put that down to simply just driving the car harder because I liked the noise it made .

As for my CJ it just has a Magnaflow muffler from axleback and one of the stock resonators cut out oh and I have a set of extractors. It sounds nice and smooth without any real drone during cruising but still gets nice and excited when you give it the boot! I think it runs a lil bit smoother and quicker higher up but to be honest it's not much. Intake mods I found do help with power, as does getting a set of extractors.

Most important thing is though to not skimp out on a no-name muffler, ask for a lukey or magnaflow muffler and accept nothing less than that!! Oh and the reason to go for an exhaust is for the noise, not so much so for any potential difference in fuel economy! There's nothing better than having a belt along a mountain pass and hearing the roar of your exhaust/engine! :D

Wouldn't know where they are sorry, I sold the car to my bro and then someone ran a stop sign and T-boned him only a couple of weeks later! But it did used to set off heaps of car alarms in shopping centre car parks!
