A CC is a good car to work on but like any mods they can become expensive, so have a plan and budget.
Mechanically if they are stock and still running original suspension, it will be getting tired so the car can be lowered and stiffened for better handling. Also lets not forget the wheels and tires.
The CAT might be dead so replace that along with the muffler for a sports one with a nice tip. The best part is you can do it in stages so spend what you need as you can afford it.
There are a stack of visual changes from painting the mirrors or wrapping the bonnet.
The interior can be upgraded from the seat through to the dash and sound system.

Yeah just painted. You can paint all interior pieces whatever colour you want. Also, if you want to put a massive engine in it you could always try to shove a 3L TR magna engine in it. Same orientation, just need a hammer and a tape measure to make it fit.

It all depends on your budget and how far you want to go.
If I have unlimited funds, a workshop (and a 2nd car) I'd strip mind back to the shell. Do a complete respray (British Racing Green) and rust removal/protection. They fit it out with AWD EVO running gear, either turbo or V6 and use all the best parts. Not too much rice but just enough to make it look like a nice show car, but be a pocket rocket that can out run most V8s to 160kph.

I agree, research is the key but you need to balance what you want to do with what you can afford and how you plan to use the car.
