Hi all,

Looking at buying a ce coupe (auto preferred due to family only being able to drive auto).

I was trying to find a 'buying guide' but couldn't find anything on the forums.

Anything I should look out for when buying one?

Any extra advice is appreciated.
Thanks :)

The CE is a generally reliable car. They'll run on next to no fuel or oil, but they do need regular maintenance. Biggest issues really is rust, certain models around 1998-2001 had a changeover in paint at the factory, and this caused the clearcoat to not adhere properly to the paint so flaking clearcoat and rust spots are common, especially around the roof line. Otherwise, check in the engine cap to make sure its non-sludgy, check that the idle is smooth and no clicking/clacking, and no other rattles. The 1.8L engine is preferred, but only available in certain trims of the CE coupe and sedan.

@donki i find that rust spots are wayyy more common in the series 1 mirage and coupes in the roof and also near the edges on the rear window.

I guess that's why Mitsubishi did swap over the paint but didnt realise the clear coat issue over time.

Nevertheless, good info regardless!

Rust is a biggie on the roof boot and bonnet. Window seals crack and fall apart very quickly. Ac craps out often ignition issues, if u get a good one you won’t have many issues but these are all that I’ve come across with both of my ce glxi coupes

rust around the ac intake under the windscreen cowl. its nearly impossible to see but worth sussing it out if you can.

I've been using my 1.5L 96 coupe for almost 3 years now. The only advice from me is look out for oil leaks.. like most older cars, seals will be brittle over time. I like my car to be in stock condition as best as possible, because I like the aesthetic. it is by far the hardest thing to find in the market with the right price. Most of the owners of CE lancers are either pensioners or P platers. Both are notorious to neglect maintenance and expect to find dents and scrapes all over the place.. maybe some questionable modifications as well. Sad thing about cheap cars.

Another consideration from me is.. find the one with stock rims.. I like the 13" or 14". The tyres are cheaper and the ride quality is better than the humongous aftermarket 17" and alike. Some people will hate me for this. But I like my car to be comfortable to be daily driven.

From my pov, 4g15 is the best engine choice if you're after a reliable engine, that is. It is one of the longest production engine ever, some new chinese cars use this engine. It is a little less gutsy, boring and can be powerless, especially if you drive in hilly condition or highway drive, even worse with auto.

My major maintenance revolves around seals and gaskets, other than that, pretty reliable car. Dead straight easy to fix and everything is rather easily accessible and parts are cheap.

Are you able to fix it???
short answer: yes. anything is fixable.

long answer: depends on how bad and what your skills are.

best case senario: the rust is mostly surface rust and lightly bubbled (this was my case)
worst case: its completely rusted through: you'll have to get something made up and welded in.
