DIY: MR Kit Installation (Sikaflex method)

SO you have decided to make your car look less granny spec and scored yourself an MR kit, sweet. Now you may have already noticed that on your GLI, it does not have some of the screw holes needed and other little grooves designed for the MR, in this DIY I will show you the easiest way to get around these issues and have the kit installed.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
  • Sikaflex (if a lighter colour use white or grey, if darker, use black)
  • Dremel with sanding head
  • Duct tape
  • A coupe jack's or similar proping device
  • Paper towels

Preperation
  • Clean off any left of tape from the underside for the kit for added stickiness
  • make sure the car is dry and the sides are clean
  • to remove any sikafex that might accidentally get on your car, use a paper towel and wipe it off by pressing firmly and wiping it away, pretty obvious,

Pod installation time

Step 1

The first step is removing the mud guards on the front and back of the car, there are three bolts holding each guard on (one underneath and two infront)DO NOT LOSE THESE BOLTS YOU WILL NEED THEM!

Step 2

Using a dremel with a sanding head attached to grind off the tabs on the top of the rear pods, this can also be done with a knife and then using sand paper to make it all smooth and level but will just take longer.

Step 3
Line the edges of the pod with a sensible amount of sikaflex. Once you have done that the pods are ready to be attached to the rear bumper.

Step 4
Start by placing the the bolt through the hole in the pod, it should line up with the bottom screw hole on the bumper. Use this as a guild to make sure you line the pod up perfectly with the bumper.

Step 5
screw in the bolt slightly and move the pod up into place to prevent sikaflex from getting on any visible parts of the rear bumper. once in place, tighten the bolt enough that it becomes firm but not to tight.

Step 6
Stick several pieces of duct tape along pod to hold it in place.

Awesome, now time for the Side skirt!

Step 1
If still there, remove the cream push clips by sliding them off, simple stuff.

Step 2
once again, line the whole side skirt with sikaflex, this time the skirt will line up with the two front screws. similar to before, place a bolt through the top whole on the side skirt and use it as a guide for lining up the skirt.

Step 3
This step is easiest with a friend or similar, same as before, screw in the bolt slightly to use as our guide and have a buddy lift the back end of the side skirt into place. once in place, screw in the bottom bolt.

Step 4
once again, tape down the side skirts firmly with tape, don't forget to get side the door for added firmness and stuff.

Step 5
use a jack to hold up the middle of the skirt while the sikaflex dries.

Step 6
repeat for other side and allow 24hours for the sikaflex to dry.

And there we go, you now have massive amount of glorious street cred and can finally ask out that hot date or whatever because you are now cooler than cool.

Probably missed some stuff or wasn't clear enough so be sure to abuse me about it

What Sika product is that? Looks like 11-FC from the cartridge, I know that's an adhesive/sealant,
Is there any reason why you used that over the automotive a+s Sika makes? Not like having a go just asking for future reference :) awesome write up!

Psssst use painters tape, not duct tape or masking tape. They will both peel your clearcoat off if you leave them on too long.

See I thought so, but honestly the tape came off after about 5 hours

Did you have to bolt the skirt from the back or just at the front? Cuz at the back there's no bolt hole whatsoever hahaha or did you just use the sikaflex to hold it and the front bolts..

Only the two at the front I used to hold it in, I just ran sikaflex around all the edges, however, if you wanted you might be able to drill a whole but I didn't bother

Noob question inbound: How strong of a hold does sikaflex have? Never used the stuff before, and have a wing for my mirage that I want to fit. I'm just worried about it flying off when I'm driving. Haha.

Wings usually have some bolts.
Personally I would not trust sikaflex alone to hold it even though it is supposedly very strong, but if the wing does come off it can cause a serious accident

The trick with any kind of glueing is to increase the surface area of your adhesive surfaces, Id say a good 2 beads of glue along the length of the side skirt would be more than enough to hold it.

That said, you can bolt them on if you get the right screws and use the factory bolting locations.
