SO you have decided to make your car look less granny spec and scored yourself an MR kit, sweet. Now you may have already noticed that on your GLI, it does not have some of the screw holes needed and other little grooves designed for the MR, in this DIY I will show you the easiest way to get around these issues and have the kit installed.
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
Preperation
Pod installation time
Step 1
The first step is removing the mud guards on the front and back of the car, there are three bolts holding each guard on (one underneath and two infront)DO NOT LOSE THESE BOLTS YOU WILL NEED THEM!
Step 2
Using a dremel with a sanding head attached to grind off the tabs on the top of the rear pods, this can also be done with a knife and then using sand paper to make it all smooth and level but will just take longer.
Step 3
Line the edges of the pod with a sensible amount of sikaflex. Once you have done that the pods are ready to be attached to the rear bumper.
Step 4
Start by placing the the bolt through the hole in the pod, it should line up with the bottom screw hole on the bumper. Use this as a guild to make sure you line the pod up perfectly with the bumper.
Step 5
screw in the bolt slightly and move the pod up into place to prevent sikaflex from getting on any visible parts of the rear bumper. once in place, tighten the bolt enough that it becomes firm but not to tight.
Step 6
Stick several pieces of duct tape along pod to hold it in place.
Awesome, now time for the Side skirt!
Step 1
If still there, remove the cream push clips by sliding them off, simple stuff.
Step 2
once again, line the whole side skirt with sikaflex, this time the skirt will line up with the two front screws. similar to before, place a bolt through the top whole on the side skirt and use it as a guide for lining up the skirt.
Step 3
This step is easiest with a friend or similar, same as before, screw in the bolt slightly to use as our guide and have a buddy lift the back end of the side skirt into place. once in place, screw in the bottom bolt.
Step 4
once again, tape down the side skirts firmly with tape, don't forget to get side the door for added firmness and stuff.
Step 5
use a jack to hold up the middle of the skirt while the sikaflex dries.
Step 6
repeat for other side and allow 24hours for the sikaflex to dry.
And there we go, you now have massive amount of glorious street cred and can finally ask out that hot date or whatever because you are now cooler than cool.
Probably missed some stuff or wasn't clear enough so be sure to abuse me about it
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
- Sikaflex (if a lighter colour use white or grey, if darker, use black)
- Dremel with sanding head
- Duct tape
- A coupe jack's or similar proping device
- Paper towels
Preperation
- Clean off any left of tape from the underside for the kit for added stickiness
