DIY Installing Gas Bonnet Struts

Quick DIY on how to install gas bonnet struts into your CC coupe/sedan/wagon/hatch/whatever.

What you will need:

1 x pair gas bonnet struts
Socket set with 10mm and 12mm sockets
A brain

Step One:

Undo the middle bolt on your fender, and place the longer end of the bonnet strut on top, then do the bolt back up. You want the exposed metal of the strut to be on the bottom with the covering shaft above it (refers to pictures).

Step Two:

Undo the top bolt of your bonnet hinge, place the other tab of the bonnet strut on top of the hinge, then do the bolt back up. At this point you will need to be holding the bonnet open manually, as it will need to be raised further back than your little bonnet opener stick thing can reach. You also want to make sure your tabs are as straight as possible, parallel to your panels for a neat install and no problems with them bending while you open/close the bonnet.

Step Three:

While still holding your bonnet open repeat steps 1 and 2 for the other bonnet strut.

Step Four:

Slowly close your bonnet, checking that the struts clear everything and are retracting fine.

Step Five:

Double check all your bolts are tight. Enjoy.

Best and most valuable mod ever!

You just need to the ones for the Proton M21, which I always forget to search for.

Thanks for the info and DIY, can't wait for mine to get here, hopefully by the end of the week!

Silly question but did they come with any stickers on them?

ETA - damn mine won't be here until next week now, according to eBay :(

gj rigby, seeing others make diys makes res happy

No stickers, just the way I like it.

Thanks Res, DIY's for small things are great, and often overlooked.

I imagine they are smart enough to either ask in mini chat, PM myself, or use the search function/eBay if they are keen to get them.

I mustn't be very smart then :p

Anyway good mod, don't know why more people don't so it. Impress your family and friends every time you break down

Seriously?? a DIY on this??

May as well make a DIY on changing wiper blades, or turning your wipers on when its raining

I think it's a good DIY, if only to make more CC owners aware this is even an option and how cheap and easy it is.
$60 and 10 minutes work is a small price to play.

They make them for all cars, I first got mine on my old lancer back in 2004 :p

Sometimes for people who aren't so good parts/mechanic-wise, you need basic instructions just to give you the motivation to tackle things. Also, some things may seem difficult in your head, but when somebody shows you the ropes, it gives you the confidence to try it for yourself. And that can only be a good thing.

This is exactly what went through my head when i started modding. Even things that seem complicated to attempt on your own can be tackled when there is a good DIY to tell you how to do so.
