Here is a nifty trick I found out when removing flywheel bolts when the engine is out. Should be able to a similar operation if engine is still in.
Basically get two 17mm sockets, use both at the same time, one as a brace and the other to loosen a bolt. Do this until you only have one bolt left. To get the last bolt out, get a gearbox bolt and the stock jack wrench and configure as shown below.
Be careful as if not engaged correctly you can slip and cause damage to a tooth (unlikely) or yourself. There are many other ways but in this case where my underdrive bolt wasn't installed and my rattle guns weren't up to it, this worked.
