DIY: E4-9 Short shift install

Sorry res remind refreshing me i adjust that from because i installed this last year December and havent touched it since

the main ball pivot (big one) has 2 grub screws in it holding it where it is
undo the grubscrew, reveals another grub screw underneath, undo that aswell and the ball pivot becomes free moving

you want to move it up there are several indents about 1cm above where the ball pivot is mounted standard
shift it up there and then put grub screws back in making sure it locks in the one of the indents

make sure the blue aluminium bushes the kit comes with are underneath the plastic shift support thing
this is so the shiffter doesnt bottom out on the chassy, it can be a pita to get them in place under there but u need them underneath

then do this

then re-install shifter normally, and hey presto, shorter shift again

just asking for the life of the syncroz... mine Is no different to how it was before except for tighter and shorter
mine sometimes crunches 2nd and 3rd but always has... only when it's cold and just started....
but there Is many arguements over the use of short shIfters and syncroz dyIng

what proof do they have that it causes syncro wear?
i cant see any way it would tbh

I'm with Res on that one there's no reason for it. If your just grinding slightly or having trouble changing when cold id be changing the gearbox oil and making sure its full with a good quality oil two 90% of the time it'll work just as new.

the only way I can say this simply without going into detail is your normal shifting time is sped up... throw is the same but it's like your changing gear faster then usual.. so the gears would have to speed up and slow down faster

not saying your wrong, but i still dont see it causing any wear that would not happen with the oem shifter, let alone any wear at all
i wouldnt be too concerned about it

i am. it might be the case on the gearbox where the shifter goes directly into the box, but on a fwd box, the shifting is done via cables and a shifter lever. its lever princple so timing is still the same as you would do with a normal shifter, but as the lengths on both sides of the pivot are changed you move the lever less up top to do the same work down below

yeah wasn't trying put put anyone off... that's just how I'd see it.. but I haven't had any problems...
but yeah...
I keep thinking about it just think about something and hurts my brain haha
so yeah Ohwell...

I'm still happy with mine :)

Theres 2 ways to that,

When you change the pivot point, yes, you are changing the distance ratios, and the top throw is being shortened, even though the bottom travel is the same (limited by the amount of travel in the cables) and so the cables are not changing position any further or less that what they did with the stock shifter.

However if you keep your hand speed the same, due to the distance ratio change, you are accelerating the cable movement more than stock, albeit the same distance. This causes you to change gears quicker. The work done is the same, as the distance hasn't changed, but your are doing the work in a shorter time period.

Regardless of whether or not its a cable controlled gearbox or one with the shifter goes directly to the box, in both case your are forcing the box to change gears faster. Whether or not forcing the gears to engage quicker wears the synchros, I suspect it does since every engagement causes wear, but if it increase the rate of wear to a point which matters, I don't know.

You can always slow down your hand movement, and still enjoy the short throw and feel of the short shifter, that way you aren't engaging the gears faster, if that worries you.

They don't post that short shifter in the link internationally anymore Res. just letting you know.
I just noticed that too. Right when I thought I'd have the money to spare. :(
