DIY; Door trimming

i have found that in my 2000 CE Lancer coupe it is near impossible to remove the fabric in the door trim to change it to a more suited colour.. so ive opted for vinyl dye!!

this stuff is amazing! even with a darkish patterned material you can turn it to bright white.
my door trims were the typical bluey colour with the blue patterned material.. so i am turning the material black and the rest of my door trim white.

all you need to do is take your door trim off. there is a screw near your dash which is easily seen, a screw in your phone holder thingy, you need to remove your window winder and the bit behind your side mirror needs to be pulled off.
after this your door trim should come off easily. (check the diy to remove the door trim)

i found that its a better idea to dye your material first because you can just spray like crazy at your material and it doesnt matter if it goes on the plastic, and you can then easily tape up the sides of your material and then cover the rest of it, and spray your plastic.

I used septone vinyl spray in satin white, and vht vinyl dye in gloss black.

then just cover your material and use wax and grease remover on your door trim, prime and paint. i suggest using a clear as long as it doesnt yellow your paint.

my end result

i also sprayed my window winder black and the bit where you put your phone black, and then the bit behind your door handle white.
it looks nice!

i uploaded a roof lining diy if you want to take a look at that. i guess you could use vinyl dye on your roof as it would have the same effect... carpet im not so sure about unless you do it while its still in your car and be very carefull not to hit anything else.

Am not so sure it would work too well on carpet as it's a nylon sort of material & don't think it would soak into it, just sit on top of it so it would probably rub off...not 100% sure about this though.

Great DIY Ash, good job.

Its not impossible to remove it and retrim it.

not impossible, but extremely annoying and i think that vinyl dye has the same effect as re-trimming it.

Has the paint rubbed off the doors yet?

My door are trimmed and I can tell you how to do it.

Yes I will share it with you. This is how my doors were trimmed.

1. Use an Air-saw to cut between the door card insert and door card.
2. Once you have removed the insert from the door, remove the std material.
3. Sand and create a rough surface for the new glue to stick on the insert.
4. Cut the new material to suit the insert, allow 2cm around the edges. Spray the glue on the insert, now apply the fabric. (vinyl, suede or whatever you use)
5. Turn over the insert and cut lines into the holes for the handles. cut away any excess fabric.
6. Insert done. Do the same for the door card. Its aittle more tricky, if you have issues trimming the vinyl (Use a hairdryer to heat the vinyl to beale to stretch it)
7. Now both items are trimmed. Make up some brackets to allign the door card with the insert.
8. Connect the door card back onto the door. Done.

This is how mine turned out.

how much was the wood vynal and where?

pretty sure it's just FG with a special wrap stuff on it, it's on the mounts for the screens i bought off sam & it comes off with metho so it's like a wrap stuff

expensive (whole dash $1000), and its not a vinyl. Its clear plastic film that is applied on.

Whatever the item is, you want done is dipped into a bath where the film is sitting on the top of the water.

and clearcoat is added.
