Dilemma with my AUTO Lancer

Okay sooo I bought this lancer not too long ago with some help from my old man and basically I want to add some ooompf to its performance.

I raced my mate and he has this little 2000 ae112r MT Corolla ( catback exhaust and K&N Pod Filter ) and he beat me by about 3/4 of a car length!!! :?

Anyway the reason why I dont know if I should go ahead and mod it a bit is..
1) It's an Auto
2) Dad won't let me sell it and buy a manual (He pitched in a bit so I could buy it)

If it's an auto, is it even worth looking at adding a couple of extra ponies? Does it make a difference if its Auto? or am i seriously just wasting my money?
IF its all good, Where should I begin? My budget is between 300- 600.

Anyway thats some of the reason why I want to make it BWAAAAAAAHp, but just for general performance increase :D

Someboooody please give me their opinion. Thanks!

Is it the 2.4? They have really restrictive intakes and exhaust. So you would be looking at getting a cold air intake and a 2.5" exhaust (Max size otherwise it's just a waste. Even 2.25 will probably be better). Do that and maybe an under drive pulley and thatl be your $600 and make a fair few ponies as well.

But tbh, the autos are a lot slower than the manuals (stock 2.4 manuals run 15s while autos run 17s) so it might be worth it to your dad. Chs are sold really easy these days if stock so you will easy get money back.

Thanks Jeffaz

Nuhh its the 2.0L 2004 ES. Yes or no? lol. Also the reason we got this particular one is coz it only has 54000km on the clock. It's in awsome conditions!

Even with the 2l those mods will still do you good but I would probably talk to skippy about that engine.

Looks like the ball is in my field

If you dead determine to keep the CH with ~55,00km on the clock, I'd be suggesting looking at doing a manual conversion, you'll have to do some more asking around and researching if keen since I haven't done one, but it shouldn't be too difficult.

Performance wises, to get real gains out of the 4g94 you have to be semi prepared to fork out a little. Since the 4g94 is considered a viable upgrade in the lighter lancers, you'll be struggling to match the real pick up, weight ratio etc... Mods, look at the basics, pulley, exhaust (2.25" going 2.5" max if planning to stay N/A, saying that the exhaust doesn't seem too restrictive for the 4g94), intake... After doing that it'll still be hard to say whether you actually beat you mate, you may end up only gaining <10kwatw... Your real power to get to matching the power to weigth ratios as a CE would be swapping heads and cams, tuning/reflashing the ECU, head bores, boosting or running High Compression (sure I've missed a few more)... And that being said you'll still lose a substantial chunk of power due to the autobox...

TL;DR, if you're serious about modding it go do a manual swap or buy a manual car, if you still keen, stick to the basics to get small gains, otherwise be prepared to spend the bigger $$$ to get outputs that will put corolla's back in their place...

Also an example, I own a '04 ES as well with the 4G94, currently I've only done intake and slight adjustment on timing, I ran a best of 16.7 (with a shoddy clutch) that defeat stock holden utes... Mine's manual though. Just need to have a think. Otherwise, if you CBF spending money on a lost cause (or cbf putting effort in), look at modding it for the looks, so Black interior($100-$300), Evo7/8/9 seats ($700-$1200), rims($1400max+tyres), lowering(springs: $400max coilovers:$1300max, exhaust($350-$500 for a catback) to make it sound nice...

Good luck yo ;)

Mate, its all about the driver sometimes with these cares. I own a ce1 4g15 auto and they will always be slow

the thing you want to do besides putting a match to the auto is to get the car to rev a little quicker be more throttle responsive, being that you have a 4G94 is ok you can help the little engine out - I would look at a 60mm throttle body these you can pick up for around the $40 - $60 (look at Magna for this part) also look at a better intae manifold 4G93 - although not really that much wrong with the '94... a SRI (less bends is good) under crank pulley and a set of extractors with a 21/4" exhaust if you went 21/2 you will lose too much resistance/backpressure which will mean loss of power.
you could even throw in there a 4G93 cam shaft I have "Heard" that they are slightly better

Just a few simple mods that should help you out - but with the money needed to spend on a manual swap not worth it...

Thanks alot guys! This is seriously GREAT advice :D

I actually like the idea of putting in a 2 1/4" inch exhaust but I've HEARD it would sound bad if its on an auto.???
Again I dont know if its one of those myths that it would drone, and sound bleh?

So just to clarify new throttle body, catback exhaust im assuming 2 1/4" from the feedback i got from chowe, and also crank pulley + extractors?

Anyway thanks again for the great advice!

The exhaust will be Droney if you put one of those cannon type mufflers . Get a offset-centre muffler in 2.25 and you will be sweet.

Excuse my noobness but by 'offset-centre muffler' you mean an exhaust that sorta hangs to the side a bit??

Got it! Thanks alot everyone for the tips! Hopefully I've got all this done before the next meetup here in Brisbane lol Cheers! :D

Best thing for an auto would be a shift kit. Makes your gear changes quicker and would definately benefit the auto tranny.
