Coupe rear side window seals

Hey guys. Still in the process of fixing up small stuff on my recently purchased CE2 coupe. Now I have the common problem of cracked and weathered rear quarter window seals. Ive searched and Ive come up with an old topic that doesnt really go anywhere besides giving a quote of 110 on the job of replacing them

Now I dont really wanna blow the money but is it necessary? Is it likely to have any damaging effects if I dont get it done?

Im really trying to ration cash between need and want with the car at the moment and rear window seals arent really the performance mods I was looking to blow money on :p

I had cracked ones too I was told by the guy who did my window that there more a dust protector behind them is the actual sealant which sticks the window to body.

I saw a cool mod where you pull the rubbers away, and it looks like the glass is floating on the panel.

Ah k. So water and such shouldnt get "into" the body if you know what I mean?

Im not so much concerned about the look (hard to spot unless youre looking for it) so Ive left it as a "later job" but with winter coming Ive realised that if they are letting water in rust wont be far behind.

i have seen a DIY for repair/making them look better somewhere before not sure if it was here or another forum

I've cut mine off so it does look like there floating. I didnt test for water leaks as I put a bit of faith in the windowscreen guy and what he said about having a sealant between the body and glass and it being a dust protector.

Then again I dont put much faith in mitsubishi as I'm hoping they sealed the glass propely all the way around ! I guess over time rain will wear the sealant down maybe?

But them being cracked doesnt matter champ so mod mod mod..

" Well I might be the only prancer with custom 1/4 windows !!! Its magic there floating..

When I was speaking to the guy who did my windscreen I asked if I could get new ones and he said you can but you have to pull out the whole window to do it.

So he suggested I cut them back a bit just inlevel with the lip of the frame as the windows are glued on further down and there only dust seal (I hope his right) he also showed me his back window on his toyota van and they didnt have any just looks like the window is floating. "

Thanks for the replies guys...

Today I noticed that the clearcoat on my wing (stocky lancer one) is well and truly getting ready to go soon so I guess that will take precedence over windows. Its at that white water stains that dont rub off stage so its only a matter of time before massive peeling I suspect.

Going off topic but does anyone know how much sprayers might charge to just do the wing? (not even whole thing just the top) Or anyone in Adel area with knowhow, equipment and some spare time that can do it cash in hand? :S

you might be able to sand the affected paint with 2000 grit wet sandpaper.it will finely remove the affected layer of clearcoat.then you have to buff it until it brings the gloss back.
i did this to my ex 's roof on her pulsar and it came up like brand new.it took alot of effort though.
however if the clearcoat is flaking off then you will need a respray.maybe post up some pics of the wing.

Unfortunately I dont have a dig camera at the mo. One is off on a holiday and the other is missing the connection cord (my laptop doesnt have the card reader, weird since its not even 1 yr old).

Thats also why I havent posted up the headlight restoration pics yet... But back to the point. It just looks like those round circles you get when water dries on your car (mine is navy coloured so it shows up easy). There are small flecs of bright shiny paint showing thru where I guess some CC flaking happened (I think), overall the whole area seems to have lost a lot of lustre and appears somewhat matte if youre looking at it from an angle in comparison to the rest of the car. Its nothing like massive peeling or huge matte area just not as "sparkly".

Is cut + polish good idea or will this totally devastate the whole thing? I dont wanna go at it with SP just yet... :p
