Hey all,

Haven't seen much on manual swapping a CE here so I thought I'd make a thread to detail the things you need and what you need to do. This is a work in progress - I'll update as I go. There are probably a million ways to do this but this is the way I'll be doing the swap.

NOTE: The engine in my car is out as I am 4G93 swapping simultaneously, so apologies if I leave steps out on the engine bay side.

This will all be video documented on Tik Tok + Instagram as well (same username.)

What you need from a manual CE Mirage:
  • Manual transmission
  • Engine loom
  • Clutch master and slave cylinder
    • Clutch lines to go with the above
  • Shifting cables
  • Manual shifting mechanism
  • Clutch pedal and pedal mechanism
  • Brake/ accelerator pedals + mechanism (both are welded together)
  • Flywheel, pressure plate, clutch
  • Instrument cluster
  • Plastic shift boot trim (auto and manual have same centre console trim, boot trim screws right in)
  • TCU (unsure of this one ATM)
  • Engine mount for the transmission (auto is different)
How to install (shifting mechanism)
  1. Remove auto shifter mechanism:
    1. One cable to unplug on PAX side
    2. Four bolts to undo
    3. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to squeeze the tabs on the shifter cable and push the cable outwards then upwards to release it from the shifter
    4. There's one pin to pull out on the underside of the shifter (connects the shifting cable to the shifter)
    5. Once the shifting cable is disconnected, pull out the automatic shifter
    6. Unplug the blue plugs connected to the auto TCU under the radio, and undo the two bolts holding it in.
    7. Once the TCU is out, it's easiest to take out the black plastic ventilation tubing by undoing the single screw so you can see what you're doing
    8. There are two 12mm bolts holding the shifting cable in on the inside, undo those two and manoeuvre the metal plate over the mounting bracket for the TCU
    9. Pull the shifting cable out from the inside
    10. The new manual shifting mechanism bolts straight into the same place, easy peasy
    11. Grab yourself the shifting cables from a manual mirage or Lancer (whichever matches the trans you're installing)
      1. You may have to thread them in from the outside if the bracket is stuck on the engine bay end, much like I did
      2. Bolt it down to the same location as the automatic cable in the firewall
    12. Connect your new cables to your manual shifter
How to install (clutch pedal and clutch master cylinder)

  1. The clutch pedal has three mounting points, two of which are also mounting points for the CMC.
    1. Five holes will need to be drilled (two smaller holes, one large hole) for the CMC and clutch pedal in the firewall, and two small holes to mount the CSC. The heat shielding has already been cut out in this location (near the brake fluid reservoir)
    2. Thankfully, the third mounting point of the pedal is already there!
    3. To measure and mark these holes the easiest way:
      1. Grab a piece of paper and a pencil, and go to to the car you took the parts off
      2. Place the paper against the firewall, over the holes
      3. Scribble over the holes keeping the paper still to get a perfect template
      4. It is a good idea to mark exactly where the heat shielding around the holes is as well on the paper, so you can make sure it lines up as best as possible with the other bolt hole already in the car
      5. Take some measurements as well if you want to be 99.9% sure you are drilling in the correct location. You have one shot at this
      6. Lay the template you just made over the spot on your car's firewall. Taping it down might help with the next step
      7. Grab a center punch and mark the centre of where you need to drill. Start with a small bit and slowly progress to the correct size. It's better for the holes to be too small than too large. You will need a core drill bit for the big hole [NOTE: THE BIG HOLE IS OFFSET, AND NOT CENTRAL TO THE OTHERS]
        1. The big hole will require a 35mm hole saw
        2. The two smaller holes are 7mm (don't quote me on this just yet)
      8. Sand down the edges and apply paint to all the bare metal to prevent it from rusting (I just use a paint marker)
      9. Once dry, install your pedal and clutch master cylinder. The clutch line clips into the empty spot on plastic holder just below.
        1. If you missed lining up the holes you drilled and the pre-drilled pedal hole, don't worry. Mark the location where the pedal sits flush against the firewall and drill a new hole. If you can get a rivet gun in there, insert a rivnut for extra security. If you wanna do it the sketchy way, get some threadlocker and just screw into the drilled hole hoping it'll hold lol
      10. Attach the clutch master cylinder to the pedal from the inside
