4G93 engine rebuild/refresh tips

(first post on here, sorry if I do something wrong)

I have a 1994 CE Lancer Wagon, 260,000km on the clock.
Slowly over the last few years I'm fairly sure I'm noticing a decrease in power across the rev range.
Definitely a dramatic decrease in power at low RPM and when cold.
I've been running it on United's E10 for several years, which is 94 octane IIRC. Also been filling it with 20W-50 oil.

I'm happy to spend a bit of money to rebuild or replace engine components that are wearing out and causing a loss in power. This is my first car and first time really working on the internals of an engine. I know all about engines in theory, so no need to use baby words for me .

To go into more detail, when i first start the engine after dead cold, I have to let it warm up to normal temp before driving, other wise she really struggles when I engage the clutch, stalls unless it's at about 3000 RPM. once it's at normal temp, no problems.
But there is definitely a decease in power once warm too, I used to drive up a hill to my parents place in 3rd gear, now have to drop to 2nd or sometimes 1st. Engine runs smoothly when cruising though, and is great to drive on flat ground. when loaded it really struggles.

Does anyone have any tips or ideas or experience they can share to bring power back to stock levels?
I want to upgrade parts too if possible, maybe get an increase over stock power. I hear throttle body and intake is a popular mod.
I'm sure parts are just becoming worn, but I've no idea where to start.

Thanks guys

Read from about pg15 onwards, I refreshed a 4G93 and did a few little things here and there. I didn't touch the internals as they were in pretty good condition and it was a lot of extra work for not much gain. Refreshing the components in the head and lapping the valves is a really good idea, when measured afterwards my compression was higher than the baselines given by the gregories manual.

Thanks for that Matt, interesting and informative read. I'm gonna say that I'll need to pull apart the head too and do the same as you.
I will do a compression test, as I think really need to diagnose the problem properly.
Any other tests I can do to try and diagnose the problem?
