1998 Lancer MR question.

HI All, My stepdaughter has a 1998 Lancer MR which is mechanically in pretty good nick, but the body is not great and there is a water leak. So the car is quite mouldy inside. She has asked me to help her replace it, and so I would like to ask what other members think is the best way forward. Should she sell it privately in the hope that an enthusiast might want to buy it, or is it simply a matter of selling it to a wrecker? The interior is pretty horrible because of the water leak. What do you all think?
Very grateful for any advice. The car is in Sydney, by the way.

You may be able to sell it, a wrecker will likely only offer $250-$500. Unfortunately they’re not really an “enthusiast” car as such.

without seeing or knowing the condition of the car makes it difficult to put a price on it.

New carpet is around $300 + fitting and the water leak is likely from a door or glass seal. This is not too expensive to fix, just takes time to track down the source.

If the water leak is actually a coolant leak from a leaky heater core, it’s a very labour intensive repair that would likely cost you over a thousand dollars.

A good condition MR would fetch between 4-6K at the moment - if you say the body is average and the interior even worse, I doubt you’d see much more than $2000-$2500 with rego.

Thanks for your reply mate. The leak seems to come in under the dashboard, and my stepdaughter reckons it was when she turned the air con on. So it sounds like a potentially tricky thing to fix. I think the wrecker may be the way to go. Such a shame...it was her mums car and she has just let it disintegrate. Stay safe.

Ahh.. sounds like a heater core leak. Set the heater temp to cold, and let the car dry out, you might be able to salvage it yet. Check the coolant level too if youre driving it still.

you can make a loop hose to bypass the heater core, for a cheap long lasting fix but you won’t be able to keep the heater functioning. This is a good option if you can’t afford a new car - remembering that a new car can often be a lot of new problems.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck!

could be a blocked AC overflow so its leaking out the joints. either way it'll involve some inspection and pokin about

Thanks once again for your reply. I certainly appreciate it.
