Riley's CE Coupe 4G94 2.1L Build

Damn how did I miss this thread?!

You can shave 10 thou from the head without worrying about the valve clearance.

You can drop the pulley without moving the engine height, but I’d strongly recommend releasing the engine mount and lowering the engine on a trolley jack. Makes life easier.

If you’re already looking at decent tyres, I’d take SupaNova’s advice and jump to a near track level tyre. 195 would be the perfect width for starting with.

With the valve springs aswell, obviously you need the upgraded ones with a wild cam, but you will notice a drop in the lower end purely from the springs. It does take a toll on the valve train all the extra drag.

Good luck, keep keeping us posted

Sadly since its a used head im not sure if its ever been shaved so I'm only going to shave as little as possible just to ensure its flat and that's it. So probably won't be any increased compression, but when I play around with the bootm end one day I'll measure everything up to suit high cr pistons and shave the head as much as it is safe to do so. I'll probs play around with some lightweight titanium rockers as stuff too.

And yeah I expect the very low end to be sluggish, the cam probably won't make any more power than stock until mid rims and the stiffer valve springs will add to the low rpm sluggishness.

Im counting down the days when everything can be delivered by the end of this month so I can install it by early Feb and update you guys on the build so fingers crossed!

Hi Mate, enjoyed reading your progress on your Lancer. I'm doing a similar car at the moment too but I'm building a track car but also doing a 4G69 swap with a stand alone Motec system. I've completely gutted my car ,removing everything I possibly can, luckily dry ice is readily available in South Australia at BOC, it took only 3 hours to completely remove all the floor sound deadener. I spend hours removing all the seam sealer in all the factory joins so I could have the pleasure (not) of spending 4 days over Christmas seam welding the entire engine bay, inside of the cabin, boot area and all suspension pick up points. As the manager of a sand blasting facility I had the engine bay, inside floor, boot area and the entire underside of the car blasted to make painting after cage fitment, nearly a pleasure.

Wow looks absolutely mad! Wish I had the resources to do the same.
Goodluck with your build bro, should turn out great

+1 for don't buy re003's, ad08r's are good but expensive, I would recommend Hankook rs4's as a cheaper alternative, have had mates get 10,000k's out of a set and not taking it easy either

Wow 10k aint too bad aye. Ill have a look at them when its finally track ready

Just got the head shaved again by about 30 thou (0.75mm). It had previously been shaved i think around 1-2 thou, so not much had been taken off. From what I know the head can be shaved to a max of 1.5-1.8mm off (on a head with stock cams and pistons) so probs right now its a total of 35 thou at max, minimum around 32 thou. I only wanted this much off because of the much bigger cam I've got could have valve to piston clearance issues if I go any further. Anyway should bump up the compression nicely, stock is 9.5:1 and im guessing its 11.0:1 or higher. Enough cr to be daily driven reliably hopefully

Been a while since my last post, still waiting on everything to come in but I've now got the custom intake manifold from LLT Racing, big thanks to Louis for this. This manifold is ready to be matched with the S90 70mm tb which is the last thing I need and should be coming in the next month hopefully from RPW so maybe this build can finally come together in 2 months time.
Anyway its a very sexy manifold:)received_1146482539481502.jpeg

WOW man, this is amazing. So awesome to see a proper old school NA built. Luis is a champ, had a few chats with him now, seems you're in safe hands. With the power levels you're going for and the weight deficit, will be a little rocket. Very curious to see how the stage 3 cam goes, been looking into them and stuck between a stage 2/HKS and stage 3.

Can't wait to see more of this!

As they boys said too, tyre quality will make a night and day change to how the car feels. You could even look at a set of goodride sport RS tyres. They're a proper semi slick, however very well priced, not as good as the advans, but could give you an insight as to how agressvie/expensive you want to go next time round. Also +1 for the ultra racing rear brace, finally threw mine in, was a brilliant upgrade :)

Thanks man, yeah im trynna go for an old school raw af na build as I feel it could be so much fun. I rlly hope this thing once I've built everything can reach 5.5s 0-100. Currently its 7.0s flat. But its not all about straightline speed lol. And I'd recommend the stage 3 just for a little more oomf up top. You gotta put new valve springs anyway with a stage 2 or higher so why not go stage 3. Stage 3 is also the highest stage before reaching any valve to piston issues so yeah I'd just recommend that. Plus its the same price too!

Oh yeah I will definetly have a hard time looking for some sticky street/ track tyres as there's so many, but when it comes to it ill do some heavy research. But preferably id like something in the middle, not too expensive but not too cheap.

The brace looks amazing bro, one of my fav interior upgrades!

It will be a weapon once its done man for sure. Very keen to see. And yeah, I would be doing springs regardless so I'll keep doing some digging before I pull the trigger (once I pick my swap finally). Luckily, you are spoilt for choice being on 15's. I'm on 16's due to the 294mm front rotors and 5 stud swap so quality tyres are a bit of a nightmare. I will most likely be jumping on the Goodrides so I will let you know how I go. Nexen Surg4's are a brilliant option for you too. Watched a few Japanese tuner videos comparing them to the big boys, and they were very very impressive.

Yeah please let me know what and why u chose a certain set of tires as im very curious as to what is decent.
Man I envy u, I rlly want some big brakes up front

My mates run the nexen surg 4's, and others run advan ad08r's. The advans are simply phenomenal, however are on the higher end of the price scale. The nexens are easily accessible, and still offer brilliant grip, make re003's look like bob jane specials. For your first run, IMO the best balance of cost to performance is are the nexens. However all are cheaper in a 15 inch size as opposed to 16's. a 205/50/15 are a great size :)

Also while I remember, If you're going for big boy brakes, don't forget to get a larger brake booster. FTO at a minimum, but an evo booster is the best bet, that way you won't have a super spongy brake feel.

Wow. Alright ill def look into them when they time comes
And also I got 195s so probs be a little harder to find tires for me but eh

Yeah I've heard that fto at the minimum is needed if going to bigger calipers

Update*
Finally got the car fully engineered as a 2 seater,
Just waiting for the certificate to be emailed thru. An insane 600 bucks just for someone to look at it, take some photos and put it into some system online. I went and got another quote from somewhere else too and they were asking 1200 bucks! Wtaf
Anyway now I can be confident that cops won't be up my ass about this anymore lol

Just got the time to finally paint the shifter because its always bugged the crap out of me with that ugly yellowed clear plastic. Actually turned out much better than expected for a rattle can job.
Anyway I'm pretty pleased with the results and will be painting a few other things in the interior that metallic silver colour
