Wheel and Tyre Question/Information Thread

The RMS webpage says wheel spacers unless fitted by the manufacturer are not legal. In NSW haven't checked other states.

Reference VSI9 for NSW, no spacers = no defects. Got no clue about safety/changed strength ect.

I would love to know what traffic officer gets someone to take a wheel off to defect a 5mm spacer lmao

"The fitting of spacers or adaptors between wheels and hubs, other than those provided by the vehicle manufacturer, is not permitted."
Department of Transport and Main Roads QLD, Minor Modifications, Section G19.6

Anddddd I still don't care :p

I think Res ran spacers for a period of time. From the things I've seen 5mm is pretty much the maximum anyone would run and even at high speeds it wasn't preferable. What are the wheels fouling? Caliper?

For reference, Spacers are not legal in Vic either, but a few people run them without issues; spacers of any width can usually be seen on most wheels where the wheel contacts the hub/spacer.

The safest way to run them is to change your OEM studs to those longer ones. This will give you extra length for the nuts to grab on to (keep in mind you'll probably need to run open ended nuts to allow it to tighten all the way), and then your hubcentric spacers (for bolton spacers i would highly recommend longer studs, slipon spacers you might be okay). As for supplier/non-dodgy source, doesnt really matter as long as theyre the right size and such.

Nothing is fouling anything, just an EOI on my set as I couldn't lower the car fully as my guards weren't rolled at the time so I couldn't get an exact look on how they'd sit. It's gonna be super close but might need a few mm to make it schmick.

I've asked before but I can't find it
I need new tyres for my evo 7 wheels. What tyre size do I want as with stock evo tyre size I scrub everywhere even with rolled and pumped guards

am I right in thinking I need 215/40 ?
or do I need 215/35?

My evo5 wheels are the same size as yours... pretty sure.
I run 215/40R17 fronts are fine, get a little scrub on the rear bumper bolts on a good bounce or hard turn.

215/35R17 is only 1.3% larger diameter than the stock. 175/70r13. Keeps Speedo accurate and gives you the best chance of no scrub. With this tyre, you'll only scrub due to the extra width/changed offset.

At 215/40r17 you are 5.4% larger than stock diameter, which is fairly noticeable and will reduce your room avaliable but provide a smoother ride due to the larger sidewall.

Btw tyre prices went up at the end of last month, RE003's in 225/45r17 cost me $120 each at the start of the year, and now cost $150 each (both trade prices without deal discounts).

Don't forget you could also run 205/40 x 17", bit better ride than a 35 series because of little bit extra sidewall height, i just bought a set of these ones in Achilles for $90 each for daughters car, your speedo will read 100 kph but you will only be doing 96.5 kph (might save her ticket or two for being few klm's over, who knows?) its only 3.46% out, like SDate42 said, it's always better the closer you get it to the factory rolling diameter.

all g boys

needed the tyres urgently cos popped one and thought why not just get them all done. They fit great, no scrubbing and no wobbling. Can now put my sideskirts back on and fix my front lip up. The old tyres ripped the bolts out of my sideskirts so i looked like a mad monster truck

now to paint the wheels
cheers

Found these, local and cheap enough for my needs (fix up and paint):

I currently have the 195/50/16 tyres on my CH Wagon. My calcs suggest that if I went 215/40/17 then I should be fine for both clearance wise and diameter wise.

Am I missing anything?

These are the same spec as my E9 wheels. I've got 225/45R17 and it still fractionally scrubs the guard inners after tucking the arches front and rear. You might get away with it on stock suspension (non-vrx) and the smaller tyre diameter . Fyi it is extremely minimal scrub, but it does happen.

Edit: 17x8 +38 is dope fitment on a CH

I had 215/40xR17 on my 17 x 7 (39p) offset wheels for 10 years with no problems/scrubbing etc on 20mm lowered springs, but they were 7's not 8's. I then changed my springs to coilovers and set them up at aprox 30-40mm lower profile, this did cause the front tyres to scrub with the 215/40R17 on deep bumps/dips in road while turning only, otherwise ok.

I was going to get some 205/40R17's to cure the problem, otherwise i would have to have the front sitting up higher than i wanted, but as my 215's were only 8000 klms old, i decided to go a different way and fixed the problem, so i think SDate42's response above would be pretty accurate, but it all depends on how bad your orig springs have sagged/dropped over the years, if its a fair amount you may have problems.

The orig rear Lancer VRX rear Wagon coils are about 2.75KG rated, part no:MR961151 and are 370mm x 103mm x 10.75mm and are 25mm lower than standard ES wagon, over time this could drop in height another say 6mm-10mm depending on klm's travelled / usage, so if you are lucky and springs are still in fair condition than should be no problems.

If it is problematic than maybe a little more neg camber would help/ just means you would have to rotate your tyres every 5-8k to avoid scrubbing.

I forget to check out your link on those wheels in the above post, they look real good for the money, nothing that some powder coating or a decent paint job couldn't fix that's for sure.
