Wheel and Tyre Question/Information Thread

They do look good for the $$ and a bit to TLC would bring them up again no doubt. I'm not sure though if the 40 profile tyre will be too bumpy/harsh compared to my current 50 profile types? I do carry a lot of music gear and or 4/5 people in the car a lot and even then it's like I can feel every bump...

I have had 40 series tires on my car since 2004, ride is quite good even with 5 people in wagon and the rear section loaded (that's with the suspension down a bit as well) even with just 1 or 2 it's all good the rest of the time.

You will definitely feel more of the road with a lower profile tyre but it's fairly minimal. It's just one of those things you have to toss up when swapping wheels. Are you ok with 20% less ride quality for a better looking wheel/car? 90% of the time it's a resounding yes.
Suspension is the thing that will really change your ride comfort. Tyre profile not so much on light passenger vehicles.

has anyone used "Accelera" tyres? vague vibe on the internet seems to be they're a bargain-basement brand, but their PHI-R model in 205/50R15 is rated at 89W, where most "budget performance" tyres (e.g. kumho v720) in that size are only rated 86V

Personally I’m not a fan of smaller “no-name” tyre brands, only ever seen the problems they cause in the industry I work in. Having said that, if we only stick to what we know, there would never be anything new in the world - who knows, they could be great.

Keep in mind though, for $100 a corner you can also get GT Radials which are a fantastic all rounder tyre for road use - got some on the i30 and on the front of a CH. If you are looking for a performance tyre, I’m still yet to drive on something that matches the RE003 and its all round capabilities. Grips just as hard in the wet and are so comfortable to drive on - only thing us you might run through a set in 20,000kms due to the spirited driving they want to make you do!

No matter which tyres you end up going for, wait for specials and ask if they can do you a better price anyway, I got my last set of RE003’s for less than $100 a piece in a size that currently retails for $170...

The number 86 or 89 is load rating and the w is the speed rating. The higher the number the bigger the load rating and the further in the alphabet the higher the speed rating. Accelerare cheap but black and round. Th at's how a rep tried to sell them to us a while ago. Worth a try if they are cheap enough. I would look at kumhos hs 51 in that size, I've had them on my rage for nearly two years and they are surprisingly good.

tbh i'm probably going to wind up with some variety of kumho, at least while my build is at stock power, but i just found it interesting that the accelera's speed rating was higher (270 vs 240)

i'm gonna guess that the speed rating means "the tyre won't disintegrate at this speed" more than "the car will handle well at this speed", so i guess it doesn't amount to much if it's still a cheapo tyre. but, y'know, interesting to notice

HiFly is a great cheaper brand if you can find any in the size you need. Otherwise for performance but cheaper than RE003s you can get Bridgestone MY02s. 60-75% of the cost but 80% of the performance.

Been trawling through the thread for a while, haven't been able to find what I'm looking for so I'm asking. Would 17×8 +40 fit a stock coupe? If not how much would I need to do? From some of the posts I'm guessing I might need coilovers, but I'm hoping someone can tell me exactly.

Use the wheel size calculators in this thread. Hope that will assist you in getting your head around it.
Enter with the Stock rim and tyre size and the rim size you are thinking of.
The new tyre size should be calculated by the widget and should also say if there's going to be interference or rubbing.
Lowering can create more issues relating to wheel alignment, namely camber and can also scrub on other parts.
Most tyre places will give you good advice on what may fit, depending on other mods you're planning. Research yourself as much as possible is the best advice I can give.
If you're still having trouble, post up your OEM tyre/rim sizes from your Service Book or there's usually a sticker on the car somewhere with that info on it.

Wheel size calculators will only show the difference from current size to intended size. It won't tell me clearance for a specific model of car. As I mentioned, I've been looking around and haven't been able to find an answer, that's why I'm asking to see if anyone knows from personal experience. I've already done all the research I can short of buying wheels that may or may not fit or asking people who might actually know. Posting up my OEM wheel and tyre specs will be in no way helpful as that has no bearing on the size of the wheel wells in a lancer coupe like I stated I have. I didn't ask about lowering at all, that's not what I'm looking to do at this point. From other posts in the thread the wheels may foul on the stock springs but clear coilovers, tats the only reason I mentioned them.

I'm not asking for a way to find out, I've already exhausted that approach. I'm just asking for the actual information. If you don't have it you can't help me.

No, it doesn't tell me what I need to know. It tells me the difference in clearance relative to my current rims, but it does not tell me how much clearance is in the wheel well.

As I said, I've been through all of this myself already. If you can't give me the info I'm looking for you can't help me.

I believe that 17×8 +40 rims might rub at the rear as from what I understand there isn't much space between the tyre/wheel and the trailing arm.

If you look at your current wheels and follow the link DirkOz gave you then you can measure if you'll have sufficient clearance or not buy going 17×8 +40 (and relative tyre size)
