NSW just had an update to Light Vehicle Modification Laws last week.

Might be a good opportunity to start a thread and keep it in one thread. Good if your wanting to keep legit and wanting to get Engineered.
No real need to chat, What the Gov says, Is what the Gov says... *coff* Nanny States *coff* :eh:
Post a link to your states reference and I'll add it to the first post.

QLD & ACT & NT
https://infrastructure.gov.au/roads/vehicle_regulation/bulletin/vsb_ncop.aspx
(QLD & ACT & NT I know 100% use the national guidelines only)

(Also note this prior thread regarding the laws )

NSW
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents...ndards/vsi-06-light-vehicle-modifications.pdf
(That is the main link and you can find reference to all the others from there)
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roads/safety-rules/standards/vsi-09-rev4.pdf
(This is the link for wheels & tyres just cause it's popular too and goes into lots of detail)

VIC

WA
http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/licensing/modify-a-light-vehicle.asp
(This is more of an interactive style page with less specific info - just open the first two drop down tabs)
http://www.auslancer.com/index.php?threads/how-to-legally-modify-a-light-vehicle-wa.2993/
(This thread is also relevant and infers the WA also backs onto the national guidelines like ACT & QLD & NT)

SA

(This page is more interactive than specific - I'd rely on contacting the 'authorities' at your disposal)

So anyone who's done a rear disc conversion needs to be engineered?

Basically, in NSW, If it wasnt a dealer option on your vehicle, you need to be engineered.

For example, if you have a XR6 Turbo, with stock brakes, you can upgrade to bigger optional Brembo's no problem.
But, like many of us have, you cant put proton or FTO rear disc's on, cause not optioned.
I dont think even basic sedans would get away with an Evo brake upgrade... might be a grey area.

The way I look at it, do all the supporting mods before whacking in your biggest mod(engine), then get it all engineered under one Cert.
Then if you ever do get pulled in for inspection, you got it all covered.

So in 1993 the only Lancer with rear disc brakes was GSR (as far as I know) since thats a sedan I guess that means rear discs on the coupe are not covered?

Time to call QLD transport...

Yes. This has been covered 5 times and has not changed since last week.

Just read the PDF and it wasn't really clear IMO, so yes I'll call them and also check with my insurance before doing anything.

From what I understand any brake mod need to perform as good as the original spec, which makes sense. I just don't see why anyone would put on brakes that are worse?

So what does it mean in the real world, the work needs to be inspected once done or can it only be done by a qualified mechanic?

Anything that needs a mod plate only gets the mod plate after inspection. Front brake upgrade doesnt need to be inspected, doesnt need a mod plate either. It is disc to disc, not drum to disc.

Where can you get work inspected?

My insurance is due early in the year, maybe I should contact them about any impact on the coverage.

You get it inspected by an engineer who also supplies the mod plate. Brake upgrades won't void your policy. Your policy is void if you do huge/illegal mods or expensive mods that overshadow the agreed value of your car.

Like adding lots of skirts and stuff ;)

Maybe part of this thread we need to talk about the best insurance companies that a Mod friendly?

Shannons is apparently very good. I'm with AAMI right now, did call Youi for a quote a while back but didn't talk mods.

Justcar and Shannons only. The rest will void your insurance like BAM! /end.

i'm with GIO, unlimited mod coverage without needing to declare it except for turbo conversion on a normally n/a car.

What engine conversion can I do that would be the best performance for a track set up rage, but still P plate legal? :)
as far as im aware on your P's you cannot have an engine swap

however later on the better track engine is a 4g93 with a turbo strapped to it, or a 4g69 if you need to stay NA
