Turbo Control Messed Up

Hey guys,

I have an HKS EVC 5 (i think 5) installed in my EVO and to be honest, i have no idea how to use it, it was already installed and setup in my car when i bought it, but i lent my car to my mate last week, got in it last night and pooped myself when i hit around 20psi.
Turned out he saw this cool little gadget, he played with it and accidentally messed up the profile on there (and decided not to tell me). I tried to set it back using the guide, but screwed it up massively and it’s not displaying any stats apart from Throttle position. After playing around with it, i think it’s not boosting of the HKS controller as it feels heaps more sluggish than normal and when i did give it some, it only registered 0.8psi

I’m not too cluey on how all this stuff works, so i need some help majorly because i have to drive up to Cowra on Saturday morning

So i was wondering if anyone has used one and can walk me through how to set it up again
Iv tried searching around heaps, but genuinely clueless getting it seup

Cheers,
Ces!

it's probably gone into some sort of safe mode and setting the duty at 100% letting all boost go straight to the wastegate. thus you are now running gate presssure

just turn the duty cycle all the way down and slowly ramp it up till you hit the boost you used to be getting.. the other 2 settings might be harder to get perfect without a dyno but you can get them close enough, just research setting up ebc's..

well it turns out the manual for the EVC5 doesnt exist on the net (alot of people are calling their EVC-S units EVC 5 but they are very different)

i managed to find a copy of the EVC6, but it was converted to english by a user on a forum and they messed up ALOT of it
i called a mechanic today and he quoted me $430 to fix it, so i told him to shove it up his ass and blow out unicorn sparks

so it looks like im gonna have to try and set it myself, i just wouldnt have a clue what all the terms mean and what values i should set for them;

OF.S - Offset A set mode / Offset B set mode
SET - Scramble boost set mode
SEC - scramble mode
bST - Warning boost set mode
drP - Drop boost set mode
FUN - Function Mode - config of the units settings
SPd - Speed axis grid point set mode
AEU (or REU) - RPM axis grid point set mode
THA - Throttle axis grid point set mode
SET - Boost map correction A set mode / Boost map correction B set mode
OF.S - Offset map a set mode / Offset map b set mode
brF - Bar graph function set mode
brd - Bar graph maximum value set mode
br - Backlight brightness set mode
AFT - After image set mode
brP - Bar graph peak set moded
Loc - Data lock set mode
PLS - Speed pulse set mode (i need to find out the evo6 specific setting for this)
THC - Throttle off voltage set mode
THO - Full throttle voltage set mode
SAP - sampling rate set mode
AST - All Reset Mode

Now i was wondering if anyone could help shed some light on all this, im gonna be up all night messing around with my car to get this working because i leave tomorrow
now should my engine be running while these changes are being made? or does it not matter?
also, the HKS site is freakin useless, all the info is scattered and mislabeled

I used to use the evc 5 and 6. Probably worth mentioning that Evo's run 17.5psi from factory.

From what you have described, its either turned off or you have blown one of the vacuum lines off. Shoot me a PM with your number if you need any help.

cheers for the info man,
When i get home from work tonight i will just double check a few things to make sure it isnt the highly probable user error
i really do like the unit, its just i havnt had a chance to investigate and play with either the unit or the car

The EVC unit is powered on (as i found out how to power it off by accident :p )
at the moment its just all the settings are out of whack and running like a pig

I just want to get the unit setup again so it displays statistics (current and max psi are my main concern) and actually control the boost,

do you reckon its ok to make the changes on the EVC unit while the car is running or should i turn the car off, make the changes then turn it back on?

Nah you can do it all as you go. Initial setup is the thing that most people get wrong! If you weren't miles away, I'd come and set it up for you. It does sound like its running straight off the gate. Just make sure you can see max boost reached in the top right. The unit will still work, and display boost even when its powered off.

Make your *Richard Cranium* mate pay to fix it, then run over his legs.

lol riggers,

well, i uploaded this video which im scrolls through them menu to show my current settings hoping that someone will be able to recommend me a better (stockish) street use setting and one little secret "issue" at the end :p

i did notice tho that the PSI gauge isnt displaying (above 0.0psi), so im not too sure if a threshold is set too high and im not hitting the threshold to actually make the gauge read or something else stupid i did
I also did take a look through the engine bay and all the vacuum lines were intact and fine

my goal is to slowly build up the weaker parts (fault points such as this) first before i even start thinkin about go fast bits, so that when i have enough money to buy fast bit (eta 2019 :lolno: ) not as much *poo* will break

cause c'mon
Cheap and reliable isnt fast, Fast and cheap isnt reliable, Reliable and fast isnt cheap (But worth it cause i plan to have this car for a while!)

You won't make any boost just free revving. If you feel like a trip to St Ives, I'll set it all up for you. I can also log the car to make sure it isn't knocking.
Also, you have your boost warning set at 22psi. The fuel map is very rich in stock form with barely any timing, so you could get away with running 22psi anyway. (I ran mine untuned on 24psi).

If you want my true advice, rip it all out, get your $600 back, buy a grimspeed 3-port ($150ish) and take it to BENchmark for a tune ($350ish)

Agreed, stock ecu can handle everything easy without needing an evc or '3rd party' boost control.
