Swirly paint

Doomslayer

I did a *fudge* up boys. I was cutting and polishing my car for the first time as the red mirage was cloudy. I did it and it came up like new bright red and I was stoked. After applying wax I then realised in the sun my car was swirl city.... It looks like dog *poo*e worse than faded paint... Any tips How did I fek up? How do I fix?

Thanks guys

My Method:
Washed car
Applied cut and polish creamy putty stuff (it was old) to the paint
Buffed
Applied wax
Buffed

Did you notice the swirls before you applied the cut n polish?

Don't know how much you know, so some brief info is a cutting compound will "cut" out the upper layer of paint, in order to smooth the edges of the scratch (swirl) and the rest of the paint. The now "more level" paint then looks like there was never any scratch. You've either cleaned up the rest of the paint well enough that you've noticed the scratches, or your cutting compound was too rough and took off more of the layers than it should have, or when you washed it there was dirt in the clothes and when you wipe it scratched it further. Typically a polish/wax is the last coat and its this that gives the shine to paint and protects it into the future. Ideally you just "clean" this wax and top it up every few weeks, depending on how good the wax is.

Not too hard to correct it, you'll need to reapply a cut, and then wax and polish it all. You might need to cut and buff a couple of times. Id recommend a new cut n polish, if your current one is a bit old it can dry up or have had contaminants introduced to it.

Dont go too hardif paint is current two part paint . go through the gloss top coat and your cooked. Personally all I have ever used on my current car
is a polymer polish, in my case Zaino pro: 2. Wipe on with straight strokes and gently wipe off. No physical effort and glass Finnish that lasts for four to six months.
No abrasives, yes even the best waxes have an abrasive action though only slight.

Used to use Maguires polymer polish but currently unavailable or should I say cant find any more, Was called Wet Look but that name now applies to a wax base polish.
Got caught out, so gave it away.

Depending on how bad it is...
1. Meguiars Swirl Remover
2. Polish (optional)
3. Wax

For 2 and 3, I like using Meguiars Ultimate products because they’re easy to apply. But pick your poison I suppose. Then reapply every 6-12 months depending on condition.

Other tips:
- Hand wash using 2 bucket wash system (look it up)
- Use a nice lambs wool to wash, not a sponge
- Dry with a micro fibre cloth (not a chamois) - get a 30pack from costco and change often
- If any cloths or wash mitts fall on the ground, chuck it out. It’s no good anymore.

Follows those tips should minimise the swirls.

Show us some pictures, i have an inkling that your paint is quite oxidised and your versiom of swirls isnt the same as ours

Sorry guys have been deep in exams. Thanks to all of u's for the advice I'll send photos for clarification tomorrow if possible

Took a long while. Have 4g93ed it since I asked hahaha but this is it after a wax. Like this all over at the wrong angles and at night

Holy crap do you wash it with a rake or something!

A decent polish job or a fine cut will help to remove a tonne of that. The red looks in good condition, so it shouldnt need too much, moreso just to remove the swirls. @Hugh-CE should be able to chirp in a bit more
