Suspension queries

Hi, yes it's me again. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say ARC is gonna be the only one to reply but I'm in need of some assistance.

So I'm just putting some feelers out for coilovers in my GLi coupe, but I can't find anything on here that point's to a good set. I did however, find these:
So, would these fit? Or have I overlooked something painfully obvious.

Also, would an anti-lift kit be compatible with running coilovers? As I understand, an ALK just tightens everything up and helps keep it planted, is that a fair assumption? Thanks in advance.
Pic below is a screenshot of the listing incase y'all didnt want to open the link for whatever reason.

That link looks wrong for the CE series, which is what im assuming you have; it should be closer to 1996-2001 at the worst.

An ALK replaces a lower control arm bush, and changes the angles of the arm. This is what keeps it "planted" and tight. Theyre able to be installed at any point with or without coilovers as theyre just a bush replacement

Do you have any links or suggestions for a CE? I can't find anything less than $1,000 and that's:
A) Too rich for my blood, and
B) A lot of money to spend on something that might not fit

For decent coils you are unfortunately going to have to spend money. It is a lot - often teh value of the car - but thats the modifying game. Can’t really avoid it, just a choice you need to make. Maybe buy second hand if youre dead keen on coils at a lower price.

I have done that - and in hind sight, yes I saved about $600 but I’ve definitely spent that in time messing about and setting them up.

as for ALK - I don’t think anyone produces one of the CE. You would be buying an Evo kit which has different size tie rods and possibly totally different ball joint and bush sizes for the control arms.

Correct me if I’m wrong about an ALK not being available for CE’s - it’s been a while since I’ve looked

Well eveveryone's telling me that if I'm gonna do lowering springs I have to replace struts to match, so I'd be better off getting coils. But I'm fairly certain I coul get away with running some king springs on the stock suspension.
On the other hand, I want to be able to adjust my ride height and stuff but it's not that big of a deal.

Lowered springs will wear out a standard height shock pretty quickly. E.g. new lowered springs on new standard height shocks will kill the shock in about 60k kms. Shortened shocks will also handle much better with a lower spring than a standard shock + lower spring. Running the springs on the standard shock might suit you fine if you plan on changing them/the car in the new couple years, kms depending.

I think D&D coilovers on ebay was used a fair bit a couple of years ago, same with XYZ. Cheap and nasty, but it'll do the job.

Whiteline did make an ALK for the CE, i still have an uninstalled (but used) set in my garage..

Okay, so what would you suggest? It sounds to me that using a shortened shock and lowered springs with an ALK is gonna give me what I want, and probably cost less than $500, as opposed to paying upwards of $1,200 for coils.
Also, any idea where I could find strut braces? I'm looking to do front and rears, and possibly sway bars too. I know GTi rear sway bars fit so that's easy enough I suppose.

Last time I did the math, if you were to get new shocks and springs for low.
You’d be looking about 1K give or take.
About $100+ per shock X4 and springs anywhere $150-250 a pair of lowered springs depending on brand.

A set of BC BR Gold coils will set you back about $1300, depending who you get them through.
BC Reds are cheaper, but I’m not sure how much.

I’ve heard you can get Yellowspeed coils for about $8-900. A few people rate them.
IIRC the XYZ coils are about the same, or less. Not sure of quality.

Might be worth a bit more research and flicking a few emails.

Sweet, I'll start poking around and see what I can find. Thanks for all the help guys, I'd be stuffed if it wasn't for this forum.

The question that hasn't been asked is, what are you using the car for?
If it's a daily driver then DON'T go with coil-overs, they are just to stiff and will shake your teeth out. If you intend to track it then for it. Our cheep car challenge car has stock shocks and lowered springs (not allowed coil-overs), handles very well and is comfortable to drive on the road.

She's gonna be a daily, and if I'm totally honest it's a purely aesthetic build. I'm gonna do stuff like a GTi rear end (brakes, sway bars and whatever else I can find that'll bolt in), strut braces and maybe an anti lift kit. I'm also considering swapping a 4G93P, loom and ECU. Aside from that, I don't really care for big power or crazy lap times.
