Rattle noise in 2008 Lancer VRX

While that doesn't completely eliminate the drive train. Could it be something simple like something caught or loose under the car and coming into contact with a
spinning item in the car, eg: a wheel or drive shaft for instance?

But it completely goes away when I turn off the engine while moving.

Most Mitsubishi engines are a little noisy, and the 4B11 engines are no exception due to many different factors.

Most of the problems with ticking/rattle noises though are caused by bad fuel selection/leaving oil way too long between changes causing sludge/carbon/other deposits building up/ using the wrong oil for your engine.

If as you said, if it goes away when you switch the engine off then it’s probably engine related, which while narrowing it down still presents a problem to find.

Sounds like the noise is dependent on oil pressure/lubrication, could be timing chain too loose timing chain, possibly the hydraulic tensioner is draining off when parked or there just isn't enough oil pressure due to too much sludge/carbon build up in engine---which is why I asked you in previous posts if the car had regular oil changes and good history, when I say reg oil changes I’m not talking about 15,000++ klm changes either.

There are a number of things you can check, some may sound strange but check them anyway.

· 4B11 Carbon canisters sometimes make a similar noise due to bad design causing the inbuilt valve noise to “be amplified after it starts to wear) similar to valve clicking/rattle noise.

· Air conditioner or idle pulleys

· Noisy injectors (not really likely though)

· Could be a loose timing chain/worn guides--- I’m not sure if the ES/VRX 4B11 or just the 4B11 T/C engine have this, but I assume you have the function/logic monitoring of the amount of elongation of the timing chain which is integrated into the ECM. When the ECM detects the elongation of the timing chain, the warning is shown on the multi-information display of combination meter, looks like a triangle with a ? mark in it from memory, if this ever comes up on your dash, you need to do a visual check of the timing chain.

· I don’t believe that there are any hydraulic lash adjusters on the 4B11 (correct me if I’m wrong) this would make it transmit more noise as well.

· Oil foaming causing problems with inconsistent oil pressure variations.

That’s all I can think of at this time of night, there is more I might think of later, you could try changing oil to 10w/30, fill up tank with 98, whack in a bottle of injector clean and go for a long drive on the highway, see if that helps, other that your mechanic must have a stethoscope, surely he should be able to pinpoint the area or at least narrow it down, unless it’s one of those horrible intermittent faults that magically disappear the moment the mechanic arrives.?

Early CJ lancers which yours is, had problems with timing chains , these were changed in more recent times,
with a much beefier chain.

As suggested by wagonmaster this could be your problem and as it is
a known problem that could result in catastrophic damage I'd recommend you get that checked pronto'

Just to be on the safe side and hopefully fix that rattle.

Thanks all! So I went to my mechanic and he jacked up the car and checked while wheels running on air. They said the sound is coming from the transmission. Then I went to "Ringwood automatics" as they are well known specialists for automatic transmissions. So the they checked and suspect the bearings inside the transmission. (Mitsubishi service centre in dandenong said they could only read the codes and recommened these guys).

Soooo...anyone of you guys in victoria? therefore, I can meet you guys to have a look at this uncommon sysmptom. Cheers!! :D

Well, I'm no good to you, i'm in Sth east QLD . The report from mechanic and auto shop is surprising as usually problems with cvt transmission manifest themselves with either vibration noises or whining noises, oil level and changes are critical along with what the dealers say is using the genuine Mitsubishi oil with any changes !!!!

You want to hope it's not a bearing or assembly inside the CVT otherwise you could be in for a shock, I would get a 3rd opinion from a reputable auto specialist, just to make sure they are not hearing a " ghost rattle noise which is coming from the engine way" it wont hurt to triple check you facts.

If they are all 100% certain then I suppose you could try changing oil/filters in cvt transmission to see if that helps, sadly though by the time you hear noises it doesn't. I did some more research on the web and the CVT rattle noise is becoming more common in CVTs as they get older, along with other symptoms I mentioned above.

As it could be a expensive exercise I would definitely triple check to make sure of the exact problem cvt or engine before you go spending heaps of dollars unnecessarily on the wrong thing.

Thanks Wagonmaster for sharing your experience and advice. Well, I'll try to show my car for few ppl before doing anything on it.

Plus, yesterday I put an injector cleaner and took valve cover off to check the condition of my timing chain. I think its in good condition.

Here is the link.

Thanks all!!

Hey guys! Case is getting worse and noise keeps increasing. I found out the noise is coming from the part where two drive shafts connect the gearbox.
Well got a transmission for $100 bucks from a wrecker with 30 days warranty. It took nearly 3hrs to get it out from the wrecked car. :D
