Rattle noise in 2008 Lancer VRX

Hey guys! I'm here with a lancer vrx 2008 automatic with the engine 4B11, recently a small rattling sound comes each time when de-accelerating and it fades away right after each stop.
1. I tried to putting the gear into N and braked. Still the same.
2. But, it goes away when I turn off the engine while moving.
3. No rattling sound when its in idle mode or while its running.
Please share your idea.

Boy, that's a good one, do you have any idea where it sounds ?? like the noise might be coming from ie: engine bay / under cab / rear of car / drivers side / passenger side etc. sounds like it could be coming from anywhere !! guess you may as well start somewhere and eliminate some of the usual suspects i guess!
  • How many klms has the car done, and are all the timing belts changes etc up to date?
  • You could start by checking under bonnet for loose bolts around a/c and p/s area, heat shields etc. (unlikely)
  • Then check all the plastic crap trim under front of car is not loose (check it anyway, but unlikely)
  • Get under car and shake exhaust listen for anything loose (preferably when cold) possibility
  • Same with rear muffler assembly (possibility)
  • Just humor me with this one, try bouncing up and down on front/back suspension, any noises?
Other than that you said noise goes away when you turn engine off while moving, and its not there when idling, and putting it in neutral and braking while driving doesn't make a difference, so what your saying then it only makes the rattling noise while its under load while de-accelerating, any noise while accelerating? Is that right? o_O

If it's only on de-acceleration it'll most likely be part of your exhaust is loose/broken

Hi! Thanks for your reply,

1. Car has done only 132ks and everything is up to date as per my knowledge. I purchased the car few weeks ago and did the RWC 2 days ago.
2. I checked each plugs, bolts, plastic trims and heat shields. All good.
3. Well, it sounds exactly when you put new engine oil, I've heard a ticking sound as the oil flows down. Now this sounds exactly same. Not too loud but a " ticking sound ".
4. Sound comes from engine bay, and it starts right after 1000rpm. I tried to accelerate and de-accelerate in N mode between 1500 - 500 rpm. It sounds perfect.
5. Today I heard the noise when I accelerate and it fades away right after 1000 rpm.
6. Suspensions are in superb condition.
7. But still I'm not sure with the exhaust system. but if something wrong, it should pop-up during the rwc process.

**Plus! Someone told me it could be the "torque converter" that making the noise.

To be honest, today I heard the noise when accelerating and it was there till I pass 1000rpm. Again when de-accelerating sound comes right after going down 1000rpm.

Can't really pick up to much from that, quick question , I'm a little confused, first you said it's a rattling sound but in the previous posts above you said it's sounds exactly like a ticking sound, like when you do a oil change.

I have a question, have you changed the oil since you bought the car (what type and grade of oil was it) and do you know 100% for sure what's in it? and also what oil filter is fitted, reason I'm asking is son in law had car in workshop few weeks ago with similar sounding noise, turns out he was using wrong oil and a cheap oil filter, once rectified noise went away.

If you can't get someone's opinion on the noise my next suggestion would be to remove the drive belt from the engine and see if the noise is gone or still present. It could be an alternater or AC compressor or just a simple idler bearing give everything a good spin for noises. It's certainly an interesting noise.

If you listen to the video starting from .20 you will hear that sound.
Well yes. Its more likely a continuous ticking sound rather than a rattle sound. Sorry about that.
Well I used 5W-30 fully synthetic castrol magnatec engine oil and special ryco fuel filter.

Cool! Will try that too. Thanks all!

What about the torque converter? Could it be the reason for this sound? But I dont have any power loss in the car and it drives smoothly and does a good fuel consumption.

UPDATE!!
Today I parked the car in a downhill road and put into N mode while the engine running. As soon I let my foot off from brakes, car slowly started going downhill and the same time the ticking sound started. Ultimately, the ticking sound kept increasing along with the speed and reached its peak where u cant hear the sound anymore( rapid ticking sound). All this time engine was running idle.

Therefore, with these symptomps I believe it could be an issue with my automatic transmission?
