People who have done engine swaps

Hi everyone,

I'm just interested to hear people's experiences as far as how the car felt handling wise post an engine swap.

So anyone who's done a 4G15-->4G93-->4G69-->6A12 etc

Did you notice the extra weight, had it impacted handling in any way etc.

Even if people added a turbo on their stock engine that'd be interesting as the turbo setup would add a fair few kg all at the very front of the car.

It's a difficult thing to work out because the extra torque and power offset the weight. The weight change between a 15 and 69 is only 30 kgs.

I didn't notice much difference between 4g15, 4g93 and then boosted 93. I did change a lot of suspension parts over time though so my experience probably isn't very definitive.

I think the difference should be slightly more, the 4G15 from what I know is only 115kg, the 4G69 (if similar to the 4G63) should be around 165kg.

I "heard" that the 6A12 is only 22kg more than the 4G93 but being a V6 there is a fair bit of overhang over the front wheels which can't be good.

I have driven/worked on or owned the following:

Mirage 1.5L
CE coupe 1.5L
CE coupe 1.8L
Ce coupe 4g94 swap
Ce coupe w/ 6a13tt swap
Mirage w/ evo swap (fwd)
Ce coupe w/ 6G75 swap

Whilst hard to compare them all (due to other changes which took place at the same time: wider track, new wheels and tyres etc when the engine swaps are done) , you can defintely feel extra weight over the front. This can be slightly combated with changes in suspension, wider front track, better swaybars etc.

The evo mirage didn’t feel as heavy as I’d expect in the front, but it was stripped, and had 9” wheels all round and evo 5 front LCA’s.

Mattys coupe with cammed 4g94, close ratio box and wider front lower control arms is probably the best handling CE I have ever been in. The motor is punchy, gearbox helps it, plus no extra weight penalty from a larger turbo motor or v6. The wider track up front helps turn in a lot too.

No surprises here, but the difference in weight between my 4g94 and my 6g75 swapped car was night and day. It’s the only downside imho to the 6G swap. The upside is acceleration in 4th from 40km/h.
In time I will look at lightening the front end and moving as much weight rearward as I can. It’s astonishing how much difference a toolbox in the boot of my car improves handling.

If I was wanting to make a budget circuit car I would avoid all 6A/6G motors. 4g69 or 2.4L Frankenstein motors is what i’d Look for and wider front arms

The best handling CE I've driven was a 1.5 Coupe and also a 1.8 Mirage (with no AC, PS etc).
I've also driven a stock near new Mirage which handled surprisingly well.

I am not sure if the main reason is less weight up front as none of these cars had anything too special suspension wise (shocks, lowered spring and whiteline rear swaybar is what they had).

Maybe 4G93T is the best all round option for these cars but I am not sure what the weight difference between that and a 4G63 is.

The 4g63 is believed to be around the 115kg mark, without manifold or ancillaries (brings it up to approx. 130kg).

I believe that figure is more what a 4G15 would way TBH.

The 4G92 MIVEC I have read is 138kg (long block).
The 4B11 is 12kg lighter than a 4G63 and according to Wikipedia the Hyundai Theta engine which is part of the global engine alliance and hence very similar to the 4B11 is 134kg.

These are dry weights without things like turbos.

It's all very speculative and not definitive sadly but I'd say a 4G63 with turbo, flywheel, accessories etc would be 180kg roughly speaking.

Also by searching some known engine weights (K20, SR20 etc) and taking into account that cast iron block engines would weigh more then I'd say Mitsubishi engines aren't very lightweight.

6a13tt felt heavy in the front. 63 feels somewhat balanced still. 6g swap needs bricks in the boot to hold the rear down

How would you compare these to the 4G93?

And did you manage to get the 13TT handling well?

93 to 63 is on par, the real benefit is all the extra power to play with.

6a13tt wasn’t to bad really, only ever had it on the street and suspension was setup by MCA and was amazing for daily use

I went g93 sohc to g93 dohc which obviously made no difference in handling but the extra power was nice. When I had the turbo hanging off it and no exhaust and took it for a few hot laps I also felt no difference in handling except for braking traction mid corner. Made an oopsie.

7kg front and 5kg rear. Amazing street feel. Have the suspension in the evo now and it’s terrible on the track

I have 9kg all round on my MCA track spec coilovers and thinking of going F12/R10 as I have mid corner understeer and notice that if I stiffen the dampers at the front it grips better.
I've read on the speed academy website that when suspension is pretty stiff that counter-intuitively to dial out mid corner understeer you need to stiffen the front springs.
