Ignition Resets Radio

I've got a 1997 CE GLi Lancer. Every time I turn the key to start the engine my stereo loses it's saved channels and if I've been playing music off a cd from my last drive, when I turn the key to ACC it'll continue from the last song I was on, but then when I start the engine, the stereo just resets.

It hasn't really bothered me until now as I'm going to upgrade to a better head unit. Any ideas? Could the current head unit just be faulty and should I just try installing the new head unit first to see if I get the same problem?

Also if anyone has a head unit wiring diagram that would be greatly appreciated. A couple wires seem to be sitting around unconnected... :/

Sounds straight up like a problem i had in a previous car, where the constant 12v + for the head unit was doubled up off the accessory / ign on feed instead of being to constant 12v +

Personally im only new around here to so dont have a wiring diagram as yet, but id have a guess thats whats happened

^ Matty is on the money, ive done that before too, the constant 12v is connected wrong from the sounds of it.

Thanks for the replies guys. So would I just follow the constant 12v and look for something out of the ordinary?

Basically from your head unit the constant power + and ign power wires are not correctly wired up, you need to check them ensuring that the constant power wire is connected to continuous 12v power so you dont loose you settings again and connect the 12v ign on feed wire, oh and also make sure you have a good earth connection.

I happened to find a wiring Diagram and connected up to new head unit. It's working, but still get the same problem. When I turn the key to start the engine the stereo just resets.

I don't really know how to fix this any ideas?

Edit: seems like I have to take the dash apart to see where these wires are wired up wrong?

Also probably worth adding, clock on the car doesn't show anything while I've got the key in ignition position. It doesn't reset though. Just goes blank while trying to spark the engine then just comes back
