Hi all, and thanx for letting me join here. My name is Greg and live in sunny far nth Qld

Just bought my young fella his first car (it will be mine for the next 18 months)2009 CJ Lancer ES, now normally I'm a research this, research that kinda guy but the excitement at a Pickles auction the other day saw me walk away with a repo'd Black CJ 5spd for 2500 that was all shiny and awesome mags and sounded great and.......yes...I know... don't judge a book by its cover..... because I didn't see the dreaded ABS/ASC service light. After reading a few forum posts now I realize I maybe should have checked it out before I stuck my hand up. So after all of this I would like to pick ya brains for a little help. I know about getting the module/pump rebuilt/replaced but as I have to get this roadworthied so I can drive it to get these things done....can the warning light be disabled so it will pass a rwc, (Can't see it so nothing to notice)I've tried the disconnecting the battery terminals for 30min. Didn't work. (does the abs have to work for a rwc as most older cars don't even have abs). Anyway hope someone may have some good news

idk the specifics in qld but in vic you can get an unregistered vehicle permit for when you're driving back and forth getting it fixed up for rwc. check with whatever the qld equivalent of vicroads is

Welcome to the forum! As far as driving it to the roadworthy should be no problem, just the Abs won't work as intended.
In regards to roadworthy, that depends on the guy doing it, if he just switches ign on to check Klms, should be ok but if he drives it up and on hoist he will prob notice Abs light, as part of ADR design requirements will fail roadworthy.

Perhaps better option would be to get mobile roadworthy guy to come to your house, they will only use jack if required to check, no driving? So should pass if no other dramas ?

Either way you need to fix problem asap

Faulty Abs pump is known fault with CJ, code c2116, repair at Mitsubishi is big dollars $$$$ , auto electrician from memory exchange plus fitting better option plus way cheaper by far.

Some of these below can trigger fault code, but really could be many more possibities

Check battery , old battery low voltage can trigger fault as well
Faulty wheel speed sensors
Bad connections
Faulty sensor
Abs module
Front passenger seat sensor
Check for any faults with wheel speed sensor, but more than likely it will turn out to be abs pump fault/failure.

But could any number of other faults causing this, have you had it checked with a code reader, best if you go to auto electrician as most cheap codereaders do not interrogate ABS systems and reset, I have Mitsubishi and Mazda only code reader that could check it, but I'm too far away.
Auto electrical best bet, don't bother with a second hand unit, as it is a common fault chances are it may have or develope over time as well with a s/hand unit as well.

Thank you both for the replies. I will try to get the system tested tomorrow but as you suggested, its all pointing towards a faulty pump. What has been the common fix for you guys? New expensive pump? old one rebuilt/repaired and if so, is it a specialists job or can the local auto elec do this? I take it this wouldn't be covered under Mitsubishi's power train warranty? And will a later year pump fit? lastly, is the ASC service warning, part and parcel of the ABS warning as it shows that the ASC is turned off and I cant seem to turn it back on. Sorry for all of the questions but hey...this is what noobs do. Thanx again and hopefully I can get some pics and better news for you all.

Don't bother with new, i doubt if Mitsubishi would have fixed the design fault in all their old stock ABS pump units anyway, so they will eventually fail as well, plus Mitsubishi will want $$$$ for a new one.

You could buy a second hand unit for anywhere around $200-$300, once again waste of money, could fail anytime.

Exchange unit best option, i see a guy on Ebay selling selling exchange re-manufactured units for $350 with a 5 year warranty (this seems to be better option?) https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CJ-LANC...292911?hash=item2a9cbd86af:g:R~MAAOSwzJ5XcQzk

To cover your ass and less downtime maybe purchase s/hand unit, fit up if working send your orig one away to get re/con, that way you would have a spare so too speak.

cheers

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Sorry about the caps but that's awesome news for me. Got the car scanned and cleared today but the C2116 came straight back, so I was looking down the barrel of up to $1100 to have mine re-manufactured up here ( Townsville way ) or find some one down south......This sounds like a cheaper and more reliable option, so again THANK YOU

Seriously $1100, how did they arrive at that figure, even dodgy mech workshops down this way don't charge that much, that's enough to make Mitsubishi prices look good again, well almost, enough said o_O

There were a lot of recalls on CJ Lancers, should take it to a dealership and have them fixed if they haven't been already. Apart from that the ABS servicing is a common fault on CJs. I'd just as happily not have ABS than pay over 1k for it to be serviced.

Thanks for the advice, I was in spot as the car was bought from an auction (no RWC or rego) so getting the ABS sorted just to pass a rwc was a...."*poo*! what have I done buying this" moment...luckily I happened to find a mobile RWC guy who, with a extra $100 thrown in, didn't see the ABS light and passed with flying colors . At least now I can get the ABS sorted in my own time. So again, Thanx for everyones advice and I'm sure I'll be asking some more in the near future

Good to see the old Australian " cash in hand" is still accepted by trades people with poor eyesight and questionable ethics
