ECU For CE Turbo Conversion

Hi guys starting my turbo build for my 99 Ce lancer , I have chosen a t25 and have found intercooler and have a mate to do all custom manifold and cooler piling , and now I'm getting into the tricky bit (for me the noob) in the ecu I've read a little bit and think for just running a basic setup with 7psi boost , if I can go with a piggyback ecu , would really appreciate advice and experience , cheers!

Have a look into a megasquirt ecu, a kind of DIY ecu as such,
Henry from hensperformance does a good ecu and tune package. Hes booked out far in advance usually though

You need to find one that has the features you want. What things you want to tune etc. You can get an entry level haltech and that would probably cover all your bases.

Quite honestly I'd recommend just starting with a reflashed stock ecu, with the CM5A tune. It's a cheap, easy solution that can be taylored to your particular injector size, timing, AFRs etc. Can easily handle 7psi, plenty of people run them for more than that. Is it the most sophisticated tuning option available? No, but in the end it's a safe factory tune with factory features that plugs into existing wiring and for the sake of getting the car running and driving its fine, and hell you might find you have no reason to use anything more. If you later do decide to go stand alone, you haven't lost anything, you already had the ECU (assuming your ECU is plastic case).

So basically getting my stock ecu in my lancer tuned ?

Plastic case 4G93 ECUs are able to be flashed with the turbo tune from the CM5A GSR Lancer. This can be adjusted using software called ECUFlash, which is available here www.tactrix.com. This will require a bunch of cables and adapters to plug into the harness to access the ECU. There's quite a lot know and learn when doing this so it is probably best to speak to someone who has done this themselves, it can be quite a minefield otherwise. Keep in mind this solution doesn't necessarily mean your car is 'tuned' as such as you may just be able to use stock maps. Once the car is going you can then choose to further refine the tune on the stock ECU, though you will find that this has limitations, which depending on the scope of your build can be quickly reached, and thus may not be worth pursuing when compared to going full standalone.

In the end your best off asking the person that you intend to tune it what they think will be the best option for you. Sure that Mega Squirt might be capable of doing what you want it to, but if your tuner has no experience with Mega Squirt software and struggles to get it going then its a waste. My understanding is that mega squirt is very 'hands on' for the tuner, requiring a detailed understanding of how every component works, compared to say a Haltech which is designed to be very 'user friendly' so to speak. I'd seriously consider just using a stock GSR tune for the first stage of the turbo build. If you try to do to much at once you will start running into problems and the build will stall and take longer and be more expensive than you intended, where as there is much less chance of that happening if you start by saying what are the bare minimum components i need to have a working, reliable, safe turbo lancer, then do those well. Get the car turboed and on the road, iron out any kinks, then start to think about things like aftermarket ECUs and other stuff.
