DIY Fuel pump/filter change

I had to change the fuel pump and filter recently on my car, so here's a DIY. My engine is 4g94, but I'm pretty sure it's the same for the 4g69 with the only difference being there is no return hose to disconnect on the filter assembly.

Tools needed:
Phillips head screwdriver
8mm ring spanner

The fuel pump is located in the top of the fuel tank, and can be accessed by removing the bottom half of the rear seats. Simply pull upwards by the front underside and they will pop out.

There is an access panel slightly to the left side, under this is the fuel pump and filter assembly. Using the screwdriver, remove this panel

You will then see the pump and filter assembly. Disconnect the plug, which will disable the fuel pump. Don't remove the fuel lines at this point.

Next is removing the fuel line. 4g94 engines have a return line also, 4g69 do not. Procedure should otherwise be exactly the same. Now unless you want to end up with fuel squirting out all over the top of the tank and potentially inside your car (like mine did), then put your key in the ignition and crank the engine, to draw the fuel out of the lines. After this, it is safe to pull the fuel lines off.

You will then need the 8mm ring spanner to remove the bolts holding the filter in place. Once these are off, the filter can be lifted out of the tank. To remove the pump, simply pull the plastic holding it in (underside of the filter) off the clips and it can be pulled out. This is the filter:

And this is the pump:

When changing the filter, I just reused the wiring for the pump by removing all the clips and putting them in the same place on the new filter

Hope this makes it simpler for anyone needing to do this.

Hey mate,

What part did you use; genuine Mitsu or Wesfil? What part number and roughly how much was it? I've been thinking about doing this one for a while now.

I'm guessing this Is the same with 4g93? Cuz I discovered that too under the rear seats but on the ce.. And as Steve said, how much did it cost to do? Cheers mate

The pump cost me $40 I think from the internet, you can get them on ebay for dirt cheap

I'm not sure if it is the same with the CE, it could be the same but I've also heard the tank needs to be dropped to reach the pump...

Sucks to do a fuel pump in a coupe. Have to drop the tank

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I'm having an issue after removing and reinstalling the fuel pump.

I ended up dropping out the tank in order to do a couple of things. I replaced the tank and the pump, and the fuel lines without any issues. However, after about 5 minutes of driving the main fuel line from the pump bursts off and fuel starts spraying everywhere, and now every time I replace the plug it just pulls straight off again.

Does anybody have any clue as to why this is suddenly happening?

Edit: Problem resolved

Thanks MazioBarditore for this. I just did mine yesterday. I got my filter from Mitsubishi parts but I did find a cheaper one if anyone is interested at
http://tinyurl.com/gsnfeqb . Whether this is at good I don't know.

This looks like a tutorial that shows you how to change the filter and pump as well.
So now I changed the filter I wonder if I need to change the pump soon too?
Probably will get one just in case.
