Cluster with Tacho wiring

pin 58 is the tacho signal which needs the pullup. wire pin 58 to the tacho as normal, one side of the resistor on pin 58 and the other to 5v (pin 81).

pin 89 is the crank signal which may work.

No luck with the pull up resistor on pin 58/81, verified that I was getting the same voltage readings near the ecu where I made the joint, as well as at the cluster/end of the wire.

Bump

Still no luck with anything to get the tacho to work, it seems as if my car has decided that it doesn't want a tacho at all.. even tried an aftermarket one but still Absolutely nothing :p anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks

One member in this thread used a pull-up resistor (480 Ohm) between pin 58 and 12v. Might be worth trying to replicate that and seeing how you go. 5V may not have been enough to get it going, or your resistor may have been too big.
Same member said that when they connected a 1k Ohm pull-up resistor, their tacho fell flat on its face.

Have you verified that the tacho cluster is good and working?

No I haven't verified if my cluster is working, but I have tried a couple known good ones but still nada. How would I go about trying to verify that mine is working? I've also tried multiple aftermarket tachos as well as swapping out the tacho in the cluster for a known good one.

I would try by installing your cluster in another CE that had a tacho cluster from factory.

Its odd, it really should be plug and play especially if you've gone from 1.5L nontach to 1.5 tach (or 1.8 non-tach to 1.8 tach). You could also get the rpm signal from the blue spade connector in the engine bay firewall, as this is the signal point used for diagnostics for mechanics.

I've messaged a friend who has a 1.8 coupe and am waiting to hear back from them about testing it.

And yeah I know it's odd, the car has all the wiring in the blue plug behind the cluster, everyone who I have spoken to about it has no clue. I've tried pretty much everything everyone has suggested and I've almost resigned to the fact that I may never have a tacho

Update:

Plugged it into a mates lancer, nothing, changed the tacho to a known good one from a guy who has just about every lancer part in Perth.

Popped that one in, plugged it an and voila, it worked. Took it back to mine, did nothing, so I remembered I still had the wire with a pull up resistor on it, in plugged it and it worked!

So I have a working tacho now, finally

I'm confused I wire the ground to tacho earth but which screw do i put the tacho signal on???? Got the number 4 cluster. Is it pulse??

Here are a few more pictures to help fellow members.....

In a nutshell, you need to connect ECU pin 58 (smallest of the four ECU plugs) OR Blue connector in the engine bay to dash connector pin 3 (vertical connector on the LHS).

Then connect Ground to dash connector pin 4.

Done.

Back of cluster, you only need to worry about the vertical connector (AUTO and Manual circuit boards are IDENTICAL)...

Dash connector, sorry don't have picture of actual connector, but it is BLUE VERTICAL 24 pin one...

Hey mate I'm trying to do this on my lancer, is there any chance you could re-upload the pics again if you still have them. Cheers

Can someone point out where the rpm signal input is located on the back of a #4 cluster. I can see the tacho earth but no rpm signal. Any help would be much appreciated.

It should be the shorter trace "above" it, it isn't actually labelled. I can probably get a pic for you tomorrow if you want.

Hey guys Craig from Discreet Automotive has anyone had experience installing a aftermarket tacho to 2000 CE VRX 1.8, I've would of had to had installed 100's if tacho but this lancer almost got me stumped, tried all the usual places starting with the back of the Cluster I found the pulse wire on pin 58 from the computer and I've also ran it from the one in the engine bay with blue plug every time I run it for the computer or the one in the engine bay the factory tacho in dash stops n still nothing the aftermarket tacho any ideas or suggestions thanks guys
