Hi all
As I’m new to this site just thought I’d say a quick gday and see if anyone can help me.
I picked up a 2001 ce lancer 1.8lt mr which is a great little car but have an issue. When it’s warm it seems to surge or it’s like it’s starving for fuel at about 3000 rpm. Just seeing if anyone here had any knowledge before I start changing parts
Cheers !!

Hey mate, welcome to the forums.

I‘d start with cleaning the MAF and the the throttle body, 1.8’s can be a little temperamental if they’re dirty.

Thanks for the advice
I have not had a chance to get to it as yet. I took it out this afternoon to get the kids and it has now got to the point where it’s barley got any power and is bunny hopping like I’m jumping on and off the clutch. Should I still be thinking throttle body or is it something more major

Any check engine lights? Surging and bunnyhopping is caused more easily from a bad MAF than anything else (even the TPS will only cause a higher/lower idle and a CEL).

Pretty much as I said originally and Donki just said check the MAF, not just the throttle body. Worst case ... the MAF is cactus.
If cleaning up the MAF doesn’t work and you need to replace it, make sure you get the right one. It’ll have a number on the top. Either 449 or 605.

A timely reminder for myself too, I don’t think I’ve cleaned mine in 12 months or so ...

Thanks for all your replies
There is no check engine lights on at this stage
I will check and clean the maf.
Can it be cleaned in the housing or is it easier to take out

Just as easy as taking the pipe off the end, unplugging it and pulling it away from the other half of the air box. Piece of cake!

So cleaned and checked maf throttle body and idle control valve
I was looking at the fuel filter. It seems like it’s been in there for a while as it’s a little rusty
Do the lancers tend to play up when the filters are old ?

Did you take the intake pipe off the throttle body and clean inside there too?
And give it a good wipe out.?

If you’ve done the above already, it wouldn’t hurt to start crossing other things off if you’ve got no idea of how old they are.

I just did my fuel filter in my car the other week, the old one was all sorts of bad.
Didn’t make any difference as far as I know. But I haven’t driven it yet.

Maybe check your plugs if you haven’t already.
Perhaps coil packs after that... I’m just throwing things out there now.

I helped my mate change his fuel filter and what came out of was just black, it was honestly nasty and looked like the original fuel filter..

It's definitely something to do

So all sorted
Dropped fuel tank and found a lot of rusty crap in there. As well as cleaning out the fuel tank I spent the 80 on a Bosch fuel pump. Refilled with 98 octane and away she went.
best it’s gone since I’ve had it
Fuel tank not too bad to drop either it’s worth a look when doing a major service
