Mitsubishi - Home of the Zero

Hi Guys and Girls,
I bought my Lancer wagon CE 99 last September with 150K on the clock. What a beauty !
Put a Nakamichi double din Head unit in, replaced the stock speakers and put some 6x9 in the back. Also put in a number plate light mounted reverse camera. Cause I am still pretty bad at reversing!
Great fuel economy, seems best at speeds.
I do have a little problem with gear changes 1-2-3. Not so smooth. tried every technique(I think) to get it better.
wonder if anyone has had this problem .....

the title for this post came from the fact that Mitsubishi made the zero's that did such a bang job on kamikaze missions and we all know about Pearl Harbour...

Hope to get some advice, maybe give some if able, and generally hang out.
Catch ya.

Welcome to Auslancer!

Not too bad a pickup, 150k in 20 years is still fresh. The CE wagon is based off the CC generation, so most if not all of your reference material will be from that.

Your gearbox may need a change of oil, i know Mitsi boxes can be very iffy with an incorrect gearbox oil, so that might be why. Is it only shifting 1-2-3, or 3-2-1?

A trans service should sort your problems, fresh oil and a filter(if they have one).

Just remember to take the fill plug off before the drain plug - no good draining it if you cant fill it!

While youre at it, take the battery off for 10 minutes and then take it for a drive as you normally would. This will reset the auto shifting memory and it will learn how you drive, not adapt from years of learned driving styles. Might be rough the first little while, but will get better very quickly.

Hi Donki and Sdate 42,
Thank you for your welcome and the info.
Car is a manual so, so the battery trick may not work ?
The problem with the gear changing is both ways.
It just seems so sensitive and a bit clunky...
May see about getting the trans oil changed and the filter.
The car was always services by Mitsubishi so I suppose they know to put the right oil in. (we hope!)
Last major service was in Nov. 2016 at 150,000km. So it must have been done then.

When I had the wheel alignment done recently, the old guy said something about the fluid being cold (?) i.e more viscous and how that may affect it.( Hmm, don't know about that)
I do remember that when I bought it, last September, it didn't have that problem and on the way home it was perfect driving 300km.

I can change the oil but am concerned about raising the car with my little jack on one side. Shouldn't it be level ?

Anyway..

Sorry, I just presumed it was auto, unusual to get a shifting complaint in a manual!

Easy way to find the fault, disconnect the shifter cables from ontop of the gearbox. Just remove the split pins and lift them off. Now try shifting, if the fault is still there, its in the shifter cable, gear stick mechanism or any connecting joint between. However if the fault is not present, its inside the box.

My guess would be that it is inside the box anyway, you could check this without removing the shifter cables. When changing gear, wait 5 seconds after depressing the clutch before selecting a new gear. If fault is no longer present, you have worn syncros and or the wrong gearbox oil. If fault is still present do as above.

I wouldn't presume that the gearbox oil was done at the services (even if specified, and done by a mechanic), as it's one of those 'out of sight out of mind' things and if they can save a few bucks leaving the old oil in they sometimes will.

It definitely sounds like fluid in need of replacing - when I got my car mine was a right pain to shift when cold and not much better when warm. Drained and filled with castrol vmx80 and its perfect now.

Welcome also :)
