CE-FTO future Race car build

hi guys,

looking at building a CE Lancer circuit car and looking at putting the FTO v6 into it as I have heard it' a fit.

can someone let me know what upgrades to the engine I can easily do that'll give good power on a budget.

listed below are items I would also like info on upgrading-

brakes
suspension
wide body kit including rear wings, something racy without looking like every other lancer body kit.
wheels and tyres to suit the wide body.

cheers in advanced.

ps. just looking for quick and different

There are no upgrades that will give you good power on a budget.
But extractors/exhaust/tune are probably the best and will give you 10-15kw.

Welcome to the forum dook.
If you want to go the FTO route, then you'd be best buying a complete FTO.
Either keep an eye to the salvage auctions or get a cheep one off gumtree or what ever,
Then you'll get everything you need, a lot of it just bolts over.

Plenty of FTO 6A12 conversion have been done.
Probably worth checking out these ride threads.

But feel free to browse other builds too. Might open your eyes to other options.

Also worth reading these too.

I'm not really sure what mods you can do performance wise, you might be best having a look over on FTO Aus forums.

Happy building!

If youre set on the 6a12, grab a whole fto. You can take the full brake/5 stud hub conversion, hopefully with a fto rear sway bar too. That brings you up to 276mm brakes and way better options for wheels and tyres. If youre super lucky the fto might have coilovers and nicer steering wheel too.

Body kit ect is a matter of searching classifieds and googling.

As spetz just said, budget power is not a thing. Best op would be a complete major service while the engine is out the car. port the heads and deck them to raise the potential for flow and compression ratio. You will grab power and efficiency here. A new ecu/tune after this will unlock all the power made here, but I’d wait till youve done more work.

thanks guys, will take on everything on board and run with what ever I can get my hands understanding more power cost money, sometimes you can get lucky though.

thanks again, great help and I'll try to keep you guys updated on the build once started.

I wonder where one can get fto 5 stud gear in NSW? And maybe quite possibly an engine

We looked at going the FTO swap for our track Mirage but, went with a 1.8 for a couple of reasons. The V6 is a big lump of an engine and upsets the balance of the car, a lot of weight over the front wheels. The 1.8 is a much cheaper option and almost bullet proof (compared the the FTO), if you do a motor or gearbox you can get one anywhere for a couple of hundred bucks.
We run at Wakefield and get down to 1:14 with a stock 1.8.

I have thought about the weight of the engine and have been looking at how to overcome that, but I will look at this option none the less, it can work.

I am not sure how much heavier the engine is to a 1.8 but the increase in power would definitely compensate for worse handling.

I have a 6A12 in my coupe and the weight distribution was 66/34 which isn't so unusual for a FWD.
To give you an idea my friend's B16A EG hatch had an identical weight distribution (though was lighter overall).

At the time my car had an Optima yellow top (this is 20kg or so) and heavy Recaro bucket seats (21kg each).
From memory I took a 4G93 auto coupe to a (different) weigh bridge and the distribution was similar.

With a battery relocation, lighter seats and something like a carbon hood the weight distribution will be better than expected given a cast iron V6 at the front

I have found an FTO but before I purchase it I need to know if a lancer 5 speed gearbox will suit if not is a manual FTO easy to get hands on?

Any auto or manual CE box will mate up to the 6a12 motor from the fto. An orginal fto gear box has a much short ratio for quicker accel and if youre lucky, has a factory lsd. But a lancer box will stand up just as fine, be better for driveability on road and maybe even better for certain tracks.

You will need to modify the engine/powertrain wiring harness to bypass the park/neutral switch. Im not sure if there is any other issue with using an auto ecu with a manual box.

@Hugh-CE may know?

So a straight bolt on, 6A12, is the 2Ltr V6 right, I haven't learnt much about the FTO engine yet

Yep. Quick rundown of mitsu engines;

6 (Number of Cylinders)
A (Engine Series)
1 (Specific to an engine design/layout)
2 (Specific to the engine. Possibly denotes chronological sequence of design)

This is useful when you look for similar motors for ideas or other parts. Theres only really 2 known/common 6A1 motors, so thats not so useful for you, but for myself with a 4G94, I know that 4G93, 4g92 ect are similar/share parts and that i can look at similar builds for information. Again same with a 4G13, you could look at 4G18, 4G15 ect.

The FTO motor is a high revving motor and using something like the Lancer gearbox will kill the performance

I wouldnt use the lancer 5 speed unless youre in a pinch with the 6a12. I didnt use the auto loom nor ecu from my car. I used the donors manual loom, ecu and had to mount the clutch master perfectly to the pedal area on otherside of firewall.
The good news is is they are usually the same firewall and there are indents where it belongs. But i ended up cutting out the other cars firewall as a template
